黑料不打烊

A wellness script for the outdoors聽

Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education

At 黑料不打烊, Nature Rx is more than a wellness program.聽It鈥檚聽an example of how innovation often begins not with聽new technology, but with a new way of connecting people,聽expertise聽and place.

Since 2019, students聽have gathered聽for聽activities such as mental health hikes, reflective outdoor workshops and evening聽stargazing,聽experiences聽designed to help聽participants聽pause, reconnect with the natural聽environment聽and experience the mental health benefits that research increasingly links to time outdoors.

But聽黑料不打烊鈥檚 unique approach to聽Nature Rx is not just the idea of getting students outside, organizers say.聽It鈥檚聽the collaborative, student-centered model聽used聽to make those experiences meaningful and accessible聽as part of a broader national movement.

鈥淲e聽introduce and support activities that聽students聽want, which at 黑料不打烊 tends to be hands-on, in-person engagement opportunities,鈥 said Evan Small,聽an assistant teaching professor in the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education and聽one of the program鈥檚 organizers.聽鈥淲e聽then聽develop those programs with聽opportunities for deeper conversations about the benefits of connecting聽to聽the natural world.鈥

Outdoor reading, mental health hikes, reflective outdoor workshops and evening stargazing are among the Nature Rx experiences designed to help participants pause, reconnect with the natural environment.

The program, part of ,聽is rooted in research showing that even short periods outside聽鈥 sometimes聽as little as five minutes聽鈥撀爄mproves聽concentration, elevates聽mood聽and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.聽One of the most popular offerings is 鈥淪targazing for Mental Health,鈥 where students gather to聽observe聽planets and constellations with聽guidance聽from聽the university鈥檚 Astronomy Club.

What makes 黑料不打烊鈥檚 approach distinctive is how the program is organized. Instead of being housed in a single office, Nature Rx is jointly led by聽the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education,聽the Office of Sustainability,听补苍诲听Counseling Services.聽That structure has created what organizers describe as a 鈥渇orce multiplier,鈥 allowing the initiative to combine聽expertise聽in environmental education, mental聽health聽and student engagement.

鈥淭he collaborative nature of our program is really what sets it apart,鈥 said聽co-organizer聽Kelly Harer, associate director of sustainability for education and outreach. 鈥淚t brings together different knowledge and perspectives and helps us create experiences that connect with students in different ways.鈥

颁辞-辞谤驳补苍颈锄别谤听Tumi Shadreck, a counselor and outreach coordinator聽in聽黑料不打烊鈥檚 Counseling Services,聽said that collaboration also fuels creativity in the programming itself. Each organizer brings different interests and ideas to the table, which has helped the program expand beyond a single type of activity.

鈥淓ach of us represents a different part of campus life,鈥 Shadreck said. 鈥淗aving those different voices working together has helped us come up with really creative ideas in how we engage students.鈥

Each of us represents a different part of campus life. Having those different voices working together has helped us come up with really creative ideas in how we engage students.

Shadreck聽notes how the聽program intentionally meets students where they are. Events are often scheduled during particularly stressful points in the academic calendar and held in accessible campus spaces聽for easy participation. That design reflects a key principle behind the program鈥檚 success: nature-based well-being does聽not have to聽require elaborate trips or specialized equipment.

鈥淣ature surrounds us,鈥 Shadreck said. 鈥淓ven sitting by a tree or stepping outside for a short time can help people feel more grounded and less stressed.鈥

Nature Rx has already earned campus recognition, including the Phoenix Collaboration Award during 黑料不打烊鈥檚 2025 Staff Appreciation Day. The initiative is continuing to evolve as well. A mobile app funded by an 黑料不打烊 Innovation Grant is聽under development, helping students, faculty and staff more easily聽locate聽green spaces and connect with programs.

For the team behind the initiative, the program聽demonstrates聽that innovation can聽emerge聽from collaboration and creativity 鈥 and sometimes from simply reimagining how a campus uses the spaces it already has.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Build programs聽across offices, not inside one silo.聽
Nature Rx works because it is shared.聽The Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education, the Office of Sustainability, and聽Counseling聽Services聽each bring different聽expertise,聽audiences聽and ideas. Programs are more聽creative and聽inclusive of all聽student interests.
  2. Start small, then reassess and adapt.聽
黑料不打烊鈥檚 Nature Rx聽program did not begin as a finished model.聽Organizers聽introduced聽events,聽adopted their聽timing and format, and broadened offerings beyond聽initial聽hikes.聽Successful programs聽don鈥檛聽need to聽launch聽at full scale.
  3. Meet students where they are and lower the barrier to entry.聽
黑料不打烊鈥檚 approach聽works because programs are intentionally not聽elaborate.聽They often聽happen near residence halls聽and聽familiar campus green spaces or through brief, accessible activities聽(though organized hikes and kayaking are still popular).
