Here you will find the Multimodal Writing Contest winners for each year the contest was held. Winners are organized by year and academic discipline. We invite professors of all areas of study to introduce their classes to this website, as there are always winners from every vein of academia.

馃弳 Winner: Anna Vassallo 鈥24 (Economics & Psychology)

Anna won with her project, 鈥淧olice Officer Interrogation Tactics: Adolescent Suspects & Suspects with Mental Illness鈥. Anna’s project targets educated individuals with a basic understanding of psychology, who are specifically interested in the nuances of police interrogation tactics. It explores differences in approaches when interviewing adolescents and suspects with mental illness, shedding light on how police settings affect investigations.

Runner-up Delaney Guidi created a poster entitled, 鈥淭he Muffler.鈥

馃弳 Winners: Claire Cohen 鈥25 (Cinema & TV Arts & Marketing)

Claire’s, 鈥淪omewhere Between Pigs and Anchovies鈥 is for anyone who enjoys nature documentaries, satire, and mockumentaries. It aims to engage a broad audience that includes college students, teachers, alumni, and anyone connected to college life, hoping viewers find the film both enjoyable and relatable.

Runner-up Jenna Manderioli聽wrote an article called, 鈥淔inding Folk: The Festival of Discovery.鈥

馃弳 Winner: Mandy Hefferman 鈥24 (Psychology)

Mandy’s advocacy brief, 鈥淥utdoor Education: The Lack of Access in Fairfield County鈥 focuses on the lack of educational resources. It is intended for K-12 students and their families, specifically addressing Connecticut’s State Department of Education and school officials to implement new policies.

馃弳 Winner: Kyle Lambert 鈥23 (Physician Assistant) & Allison Russo鈥23 (Physician Assistant)

Kyle and Allison’s project, 鈥淪kin Deep鈥 leverages YouTube Shorts and TikTok to educate about dermatological conditions with visual examples. They highlight conditions affecting people with darker skin tones, using humor to make clinical facts more engaging.

Runner-ups Alex Miller, Nick Bush & Chaney Patton created their poster called, 鈥淗ow Does Dual Tasking Effect Gait in Individuals Who Use Prosthetics?鈥 ______________________________________________________________________________

Jennifer won for her video, 鈥淚nterview with Dean Kramer.鈥 This video is meant to resonate with first-generation law students. The point of creating this video is to discuss common misconceptions that many students may have when entering law school.

馃弳 James Hemmingway 鈥25 (Marketing & Public Health)

James Hemmingway created a commemorative booklet titled 鈥淐elebrating 10 Years of the Gender and LGBTQIA Center鈥. The booklet was given out to attendees in print to show the history of the GLC and sent out in digital form via email to donors, alumni, faculty, staff, and students.

Runner-up Kara Mckinley created a video titled, 鈥淭he Kernodle Center: The Heart of Civic Life鈥

馃弳 Winner: Alexander Japit ’24 (Physical Therapy)

This submission, titled Medical Qigong and Polyvagal Theory, is by Alexander Japit, a graduate student at 黑料不打烊 studying Physical Therapy. This video was produced for anyone interested in Medical Qigong or mind-body exercises, but could be particularly beneficial for physical therapy students or Qigong Practitioners. The project aims to inform and educate about Medical Qigong and its effects on the Vagus nerve, demonstrating its importance as a practice. Medical Qigong is not heavily discussed in healthcare, but mind-body practices have a lot of potential, making it imperative to teach about them.

Runner-up Emily ’23 created an infographic titled “Therapeutic Plasma Exchange.”

鈥淧rotecting Children From Evolving Online Threats鈥

馃弳 Winner: Oliva Archer ’23 (iMedia)聽

Olivia Archer, 黑料不打烊 grad 鈥22 and iMedia 鈥23, was this year鈥檚 grand prize winner. The submission, 鈥淚f You Give a Pig a Pancake,鈥 features child-like animations of the story. The creator used Adobe Illustrator to create this playful, two-dimensional piece to make this lighthearted work engage younger children. Archer aims to ultimately become a storyteller, which was successfully achieved through this piece.

Runner-up Caroline ’23 designed a project titled, 鈥淢ultitudes.鈥

馃弳 Winner: Greg Seegaly ’24 (Creative Writing) , Kai M ’24 (Music Production), Kai Whiteside ’25 (English Language and Literature)聽

This powerful video created by a group of undergraduate students calls attention to the lack of mental health support in our society. It functions to help others struggling with isolation, as well as calling out the ignorance and lack of support from other members of society. While the video is meant for groups of all backgrounds, the primary target for this video is the group of people suffering from the emotions depicted throughout the piece. The intent of this piece is to inspire change, inform those who lack education in suicidal ideation, and confront the lack of care and prioritization regarding this topic in modern society. Ultimately, the hope is to create a meaningful connection with those struggling with mental health issues and to help create more awareness for this same group of people.

Runner-up Jay ’23 created a timeline titled, 鈥淭he Necessity of Violence in the Fight for Equality.鈥

馃弳 Winner: Lucy Verdone 鈥23 (Marketing), Claudia Flint 鈥23 (Business Administration), Gianna Rella 鈥23 (Marketing & Finance)

Lucy Verdone, Claudia Flint, and Gianna Rella created this business idea as an example of the methodology used to integrate a new business into an already competitive industry. They created their work as a teaching tool for new business development students. When presented in a global marketing class, this specific project was used as a pitch with the intent of entertaining and inspiring the audience with the creativity of both the product and the company.

Runners-up Joseph ’23, Gillian ’23, and Madison completed a PowerPoint slideshow titled “Hunting’s Financial Synopsis.”

馃弳 Winner: Julia Strouse 鈥24 (Middle Grades Education & Policy Studies)

Julia Strouse created this presentation as a tool to inform and persuade policymakers to make changes in terms of equity and access to disability resources for students in the United States. Multiple nodes of communication and appealing visuals were deliberately used to enhance the efficacy of the presentation. The presentation is aimed at policymakers, specifically those who work for the Department of Education, and could influence decisions made within state and local education systems.

We paused the competition in 2021 due to COVID-19. 2022 was our welcome back year for the Multimodal Contest, with eight schools and winners for this year. 馃弳 Winner: Emily Holland 鈥22 (Strategic Communications)

Emily Holland鈥檚 infographic is titled 鈥淧eer Review Activities in Classrooms: Current Difficulties聽 and Solutions.鈥 This winning piece aims to aid individuals interested in peer editing to offer potential problems with the standard peer review process and inform them of possible solutions. Individuals involved with education such as teachers, college students in educational programs, parents or professors are the intended audience for this type of work.

Runner-up Kayla created a podcast entitled, 鈥淣ansemond River High School Vs. The Lion King: Copyright Claims.鈥 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

馃弳 Winners: Noah Jordan 鈥23 (Media Analytics), Michael Faccibene 鈥22 (Strategic Communications, Media Analytics & Business) & Jess Kalinowski 鈥22 (Strategic Communications & Media Analytics)

This group鈥檚 winning piece, 鈥淩eddit as a Marketing Tool,鈥 was a project created for small business owners who are looking to grow their business in both popularity and sales. The purpose was to inform the audience about the untapped potential of Reddit as a marketing tool. The intention for the audience is to use the text as a guide for future company success in that field. This project uses visually appealing text and images that maintain a professional appearance to ensure the audience understands the message.

School of Education:

馃弳听Winner: Jack Corby 鈥22 (Policy Studies)

Jack made an advocacy brief titled, 鈥淭he Benefits of Place-Based Education (PBE) and the Need For More Research.鈥 The project is for the superintendents of Washington DC, Houston, TX, and the Oakland, CA school districts. The brief is advocating for Place Based Education in those three districts, intended to inform those about PBE and highlight its needs. It uses clear, concise language, in depth background research and an emphasis on its message.

Runner-up Lila created an Advocacy Brief/Infographic called, 鈥淪upporting Breastfeeding in the Workplace.鈥 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

School of Health and Sciences:

馃弳 Winner: Jennifer Gehrin 鈥17 (Exercise Science)

Jennifer made an infographic entitled, 鈥淐entral Sensitization Patient Handout.鈥 The infographic鈥檚 purpose is to provide education to patients about their pain that can be used during treatment to help physical therapists explain chronic pain in patient centered language. It can also be used as a tool to inform physical therapists that explain a patient鈥檚 diagnosis.

Runner-ups Brendal Vargo, Shannon Franklin & Nathan Tometich created their poster called, 鈥淧oor Concurrent Validity of Wearable Sensors for Joint Angle Measurement During Gait.鈥 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

馃弳听Winner: Cassandra Saxton (Law)

Cassandra won for her drawing, 鈥淎 Word in 420.鈥 The piece is for practicing law students, and is supposed to specify a complex emotion. This artwork represents the guilt and pressure that black law students are under, which is expressed visually, also using descriptive words.

Runner-up Destinee Astheimer created a video presentation titled, 鈥淣egotiating Service Agreements.鈥 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

CORE:

馃弳 Group Winners: Julianna Fazzino 25鈥 (Biochemistry), Abby Hollenbeck, Emma Brunell, Ben Kaplan & Alyssa Wise 鈥25 (Acting & Arts Administration)

The winning group鈥檚 magazine is titled 鈥淭he Crisis of Somalia: The Terror of Al-Shabab.鈥 This booklet targets college students to educate them on this particular crisis in Somalia. It is also a useful tool for local organizations and research groups that explore this issue and other conflicts in similar declining countries.

馃弳 Winner: Kayla Shaw 鈥22 (Strategic Communications & Communication Design)

Kayla created Table Tents titled 鈥淏lue Ribbon Diner Seasonal Table Tents.鈥 These table tents are designed to persuade people to try out one of Blue Ribbon Diner鈥檚 specialty seasonal milkshakes. The table tents strive to amplify in-store visitation by both new and loyal customers and frequent revisitation to exponentially increase revenue.

Runner-up MJ Segal created a Legal Brief titled, 鈥淧ublic Housing Eviction Due to Death of Guardian Brief.鈥 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Internship:

馃弳 Winner: Lily Kays 鈥23 (Political Science)

Lily鈥檚 podcast was called 鈥淨ueer and Divine: Conversations with Spirit and Pride.鈥 The podcast鈥檚 audience is intended to be students who identify with the LGBTQ+ community that also have a religious and spiritual identity (or lack thereof). It creates a space for guests to share their stories and educate each other about their messages, working to make them feel like they are not alone in their own journeys within an intersection that is not often discussed.

Runner-up Ridley Randolph created a promotional video entitled, 鈥淕LC 黑料不打烊 Day.鈥

For this year, we had a total of eight submissions, with the School of Education being excluded. However, this is an exciting step in the right direction compared to the previous two years. This winning piece from the Grand Prize Winner is titled, 鈥淢eeting Muslims.鈥 The piece is intended for individuals seeking to learn more about Islam and those who have inaccurate preconceived ideas about Muslims. It also is intended to act as a resource for journalists, teachers and students, in hopes to provide them with an alternative view of what practitioners of Islam look like in the United States.

The runner-up for this category was Nyah Britt for their piece about the Growth of Japanese Animation. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

馃弳 Winner: Charlotte Billingsley聽鈥21 (Entrepreneurship and Professional Sales)

This winning piece is titled, 鈥淓xtremity.鈥 Unfortunately the video is private, but it mimics a 鈥渟hark tank style鈥 format, where the audience targets investors. In addition, it鈥檚 intended for those who love to travel, take photos/videos and be adventurous. 馃弳 Winner: Kristie Chan聽鈥21 (Broadcast Journalism)

This winning piece is titled, 鈥淭rading Strikes for Strokes: A Paraplegic鈥檚 Journey of Perseverance.鈥 This video targets the adult paraplegic community and uses the subject鈥檚 personal experiences to serve as a heartwarming and inspiring lesson to them. His lesson serves as a persuasive message to change the mindset of individuals who are overcoming a challenging obstacle.

The runner-up for this category was Anna Sizemore, who created an infographic titled, 鈥淜ill the USA Death Penalty.鈥

This submission is titled 鈥淏e Human Centered.鈥 She created interactive mini case study stories that, alongside online resources, give her audience tools to apply empathy in their work and daily lives. She included a creative component of letting her audience choose their own adventure scenarios highlighting the importance of an empathetic mindset and inspiring people to be more empathetic.

2018 Multimodal Contest Winners

This was the first year of the contest. Despite the fact that it was the first Multimodal Contest, there was an impressive turnout for submissions from some of the schools and more, including Student Life, Graduate Program, and COR. Even though there wasn鈥檛 a Grand Prize Winner and not every school was able to participate this year, the initial participants made a positive first impression.
