Alan White, who had a 35-year career leading ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ athletics, and A. Hope Williams, president of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, received ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Medallions at the Aug. 24 ceremonies marking the beginning of 2009 Planning Week.

Kathryn Mansfield Matera, associate professor of chemistry, has been selected as the third recipient of the A.L. Hook Emerging Scholar Professorship in Science and Mathematics at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ. The professorship provides funding and opportunities for faculty to mentor students and involve undergraduates in research and special projects.

Noel Lee Allen, a 1969 ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ alumnus whose distinguished legal career has won international accolades, received an honorary doctor of humane letters during ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s Convocation for Honors on March 31. The degree was conferred by President Leo M. Lambert and presented by John G. Sullivan, professor emeritus of philosophy.

The National Society for Experiential Education has named ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ President Leo M. Lambert the winner of an inaugural award for his contributions to experiential education. Lambert, one of 29 nominees for the honor, will receive the William M. Burke Presidential Award for Excellence in Experiential Education this fall at the society’s annual conference in Dallas.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has recognized ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ in its 2009 “Great Colleges to Work For” program, which honors institutions for best practices and policies, such as faculty-administration relations, confidence in senior leadership, and compensation and benefits.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ will present a second concert with this summer's Eastern Music Festival on Monday, July 13, when guest conductor Chelsea Tipton leads EMF's two student orchestras in a lively pops concert on the lawn Under the Oaks. The music begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Holland House, a 4,000-square-foot brick building that once served as the official residence of two ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ presidents, will become the home of the new Catholic Newman Center at the university.
