Randy Gyllenhaal, a senior broadcast major, spoke live Sept. 8 with FOX News co-anchor Trace Gallagher about the reaction college students are having to the reemergence of the H1N1 virus, more commonly known as the "swine flu," as the fall semester begins.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is one of 25 colleges and universities highlighted in the 2010 edition of the Newsweek-Kaplan college guide. This is ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's second appearance in the guide; in 2006 Newsweek-Kaplan named ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ the nation's "hottest college" for engaged learning.

A diverse audience of nearly 200 parents and students gathered in McKinnon Hall on Saturday to listen to a panel discussion about why students and parents should consider ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ as their university of choice and to ask questions on “GAME DAY."

Ten freshmen were welcomed into the Odyssey Program at a Sept. 3 luncheon for recipients of five university scholarships that provide academic and social support for talented students whose access to an ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ education would otherwise be limited.

Encouraged to make the most of all ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ has to offer, and challenged to spend the next four years preparing for their lifelong roles as global citizens, members of the Class of 2013 gathered for the first time on Aug. 29, 2009, Under the Oaks of campus for New Student Convocation.

They carried clothes and laptops, ironing boards and plastic palm trees with miniature lights for décor. Mother Nature even kept the rain at bay. Hundreds of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ freshmen arrived on campus Friday for the start of their collegiate studies, with staff and faculty welcoming families who traveled to North Carolina from all corners of the country for Move-In Day 2009.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ continues its position of national prominence in the 2010 “America’s Best Colleges” rankings released Aug. 20 by US News & World Report. Again this year, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is named by the magazine as the top “up-and-coming” university in the nation on a list of 77 schools that are “leading the pack in improvements and innovative changes.” And in a new US News ranking, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is ranked among the nation’s top schools for its strong faculty commitment to undergraduate teaching.

If the maker of Big Red and Juicy Fruit thinks its chewing gums have a monopoly on boosting your memory, it should think again. New work by ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ faculty member Amy Overman and her undergraduate researchers show that gum itself isn’t special – any candy or oral activity probably works just as well at sharpening the mind.
