黑料不打烊 co-hosts statewide journalism workshop

High school students from throughout North Carolina had the opportunity to hear from many 黑料不打烊 presenters on topics such as podcasting, design and social media.

Olivia Allen-Price ’09 offered a session on podcasting during the NCSMA regional high school journalism workshop.

Several 黑料不打烊 faculty, staff and alumni led sessions and helped organize the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association鈥檚 fall regional high school journalism workshop held virtually on Oct. 15.

More than 150 high school students and advisers from across the state attended the workshop, which featured tracks dedicated to news/online, yearbook, literary magazine, photography/art/design, editorial leadership, adviser leadership and broadcasting/podcasting, along with opening panels on reporting during the time of COVID and how to cover the election. 黑料不打烊 co-sponsored the event along with Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina A&T State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. Central University, East Carolina University, the Raleigh News & Observer and the Charlotte Observer.

Colin Donohue 鈥05, School of Communications director of student engagement and alumni affairs, Tommy Kopetskie, communications manager in the School of Communications, and Kelly Furnas, lecturer of journalism, helped coordinate 黑料不打烊鈥檚 contributions to the workshop by identifying an opening panelist and fully scheduling nine of the 21 sessions available to students.   • Communications Dean Rochelle Ford offered a welcome at the start of the workshop.
  • Ginette Archinal, 黑料不打烊鈥檚 medical director of student health and university physician, served on the opening panel titled 鈥淩eporting in the Age of COVID.鈥
  • Kelly Furnas, lecturer of journalism, presented 鈥淩ethinking Takedown Requests and the Right to be Forgotten.鈥
  • Bryan Baker, School of Communications director of technology, operations and multimedia projects, presented 鈥淐reative Sound for Visual Media.鈥
  • Olivia Allen-Price 鈥09, host and editor of KQED鈥檚 鈥淏ay Curious鈥 podcast in San Francisco, presented 鈥淔ree Tools to Start Your Own Podcast.鈥
  • Randy Piland, chair of the Communication Design Department and senior lecturer in communication design, presented 鈥淭he Best Camera is the One You Have.鈥
  • Shannon Zenner, assistant professor of communication design, presented 鈥淎 Workshop in Creative Design Thinking.鈥
  • Ben Hannam, associate professor of communication design, presented 鈥淪trategies for More Effective Design Thinking.鈥
  • Drew Perry, associate professor of English, presented 鈥淧ublishing Remotely in the Time of COVID.鈥
  • Maya Eaglin 鈥19, digital reporter for NBC鈥檚 鈥淪tay Tuned,鈥 presented 鈥淯sing Social Media to Report the News.鈥
  • Jason Husser, associate professor of political science and policy studies and director of the 黑料不打烊 Poll, presented 鈥淗ow to Get the Most out of Election Polls.鈥
  • Abby Igoe, School of Communications assistant director of multimedia projects, produced a video tour of the School of Communications for the workshop鈥檚 closing session.

is a statewide organization that promotes excellence in scholastic journalism, promotes professional growth of journalism advisers and speaks for scholastic media in matters of curriculum and instruction. The organization, which is run out of UNC, typically hosts several events throughout the year, and this is the first year 黑料不打烊 has co-hosted a regional high school workshop with NCSMA.
