黑料不打烊

First-year students gain insider鈥檚 look with 鈥30 Minutes with 黑料不打烊Comm鈥 events

There is still time to RSVP for the School of Communications鈥 upcoming half-hour Zoom events highlighting internships, student media, school organizations and the 黑料不打烊 in Los Angeles program.

The School of Communications is hosting a series of virtual events this week designed to introduce incoming first-year students to its signature experiences, initiatives and opportunities. The series kicked off Monday evening with a welcome from Dean Rochelle Ford, followed by an introduction to the school鈥檚 FreshTV initiative, an accelerated training program for news reporting, documentary filmmaking and non-fiction storytelling.

The School of Communications kicked off its “30 Minutes with 黑料不打烊Comm” events on Aug. 3 with an introduction to FreshTV, where students receive instruction on cameras and other equipment, studio rotations, story design, and production and planning.

Most importantly, first-year students can still RSVP for the remaining 鈥30 Minutes with 黑料不打烊Comm鈥 sessions 鈥撀爏ee the topics and schedule below.

Thirty-one first-year students 鈥 all set to officially begin their 黑料不打烊 experiences later this month 鈥 participated in the 30-minute informational session on Aug. 3. After greetings from Ford, Bryan Baker, director of technology, operations and multimedia projects, and rising senior Jesse Newman, a cinema and television arts major, outlined FreshTV鈥檚 benefits and expectations.

鈥淭his my favorite program in the school,鈥 said Baker, who will lead the initiative for the eighth time this fall. 鈥淚 get you guys first. I get you from day one 鈥 and I get to see your passion. And then I get to see what you do with it for four years 鈥撀燼nd longer.鈥

In fall 2019, 57 students put their skills into practice in the initiative.

Due to the university鈥檚 COVID-19 safety guidelines 鈥撀燼vailable on the Ready & Resilient website 鈥 聽the FreshTV program will look a bit different this fall, moving to Turner Theatre and splitting into sections. But Baker emphasized that students will still see the same benefits from the Monday evening program: skill development and building a professional and personal network.

Thirty-one students joined the school’s first “30 Minutes with 黑料不打烊Comm” informational session.

鈥淔reshTV is a way to get ahead, and a good way to discover your passions,鈥 Baker said. 鈥淏ut the most important aspect is that you will build a network of quality people.鈥

Newman, who will serve as Baker鈥檚 FreshTV teacher鈥檚 assistant this fall, explained that the 14-week program 鈥撀爓hich requires mandatory attendance 鈥撀燾an initially seem daunting, but the benefits are numerous.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a bit of a time commitment, but it is absolutely worth the time,鈥 Newman said. 鈥淵ou develop great friendships, you learn, (and) you explore things that you haven鈥檛 yet.鈥

Following the FreshTV overview, the student attendees asked questions about the program鈥檚 weekly time commitment (two hours of instruction, plus time outside the Monday evening sessions) and necessary prior experience (none required).

Baker said each year the program has students enter with a variety of skills and experience, but that the knowledge gap closes quickly during the semester.
