黑料不打烊

Bringing a candidate to campus usually signifies the聽final stages of the interview process.聽This important聽recruitment聽milestone聽gives the candidate聽a chance to聽better understand聽your聽department and the campus community,聽while聽also聽helping search committee members聽move beyond initial impressions聽to determine if the candidate聽is聽a good fit聽for the position.聽In order for a candidate to interview in-person, proof of vaccination or proof of a recent negative COVID test must be submitted to the hiring manager.聽Managers only need to view the vaccination card or negative test result, not collect or store the information.

However,聽as we鈥檝e seen聽during聽the聽COVID-19聽pandemic,聽there are times when聽alternate arrangements聽for聽in-person interviews聽are聽necessary.聽Fortunately, with聽web conferencing聽technology and a few best practices,聽you can continue to聽hold聽face-to-face interviews聽when in-person聽meetings aren鈥檛聽possible.

Web Conferencing with Zoom

Information Technology聽provides聽Zoom as a secure platform聽for your virtual interviews.聽Zoom is聽a well-known tool聽that鈥檚聽easy to use,聽mobile-friendly聽and聽supported by聽Information Technology.聽You can provide candidates聽with a link to聽enter virtual interviews聽using the platform.聽Learn more about聽.

Set Up the Interview

The search committee chair should agree on the format for conducting the interviews. There are two ways to聽host聽an interview in聽Zoom:聽via聽a聽standard聽scheduled meeting听辞谤听personal room.聽Standard scheduled meetings聽offer聽a unique URL and meeting number聽to聽share with聽candidates, who聽must have this information to join.聽A聽personal room聽allows you to use聽the same URL and access code聽for each virtual interview聽and offers聽the option to lock聽the meeting,聽so that no one else may enter.聽When deciding which聽option聽to聽choose, note that a聽standard聽scheduled meeting聽may be聽cumbersome if聽you have scheduled聽back-to-back interviews聽as聽your search committee will聽have to聽access聽a new URL聽and code聽each聽time.聽The one unique聽URL and code聽offered by personal rooms means聽you聽can聽simply lock others out until you聽are ready.聽Ultimately,聽the functionality聽of both options is聽the聽same once the聽meeting begins.

Test Equipment Ahead of Time

Zoom offers a聽聽where anyone can join,聽test their audio and video, and even practice sharing their screen聽before giving聽a presentation.聽Encourage聽candidates聽and聽search committee聽members聽to use this test space to聽ensure their聽equipment is聽working correctly.聽If聽a聽candidate wants more reassurance, offer to聽schedule a brief practice run with them to put them at ease.

During the Interview

When the interview begins,聽ask聽search committee members聽to mute their microphones聽to聽reduce聽background noise.聽Consider having聽a member of the search committee host the meeting and play a facilitator role, to keep time, and remind the group when to mute and unmute mics to reduce feedback, and to funnel questions to the candidate in an orderly way. The meeting organizer also has the ability to set all people entering the space to be muted automatically, or to mute/unmute specific people once the meeting has begun. Learn more about .

Recording the Interview

Consider recording the interview聽for those who can鈥檛 attend,听辞谤听to聽refer back聽to聽when聽trying to make the final decision. If you plan to record the interview,聽obtain permission from聽the聽candidate聽prior to the meeting.聽Webex聽recordings聽saved to the cloud (default)聽can be found聽by going to聽. Once there, select聽Recordings.聽Note that depending on the length of the interview, the recording may take up to 24 hours to generate.聽When sharing the recording with others, be careful聽to only share聽with people who聽are a part of the selection process. Candidate interviews should never be made publicly available to people outside of 黑料不打烊.

Remote Research/Scholarship/General聽Presentations

The process for setting up a research or scholarship presentation in聽Zoom would work the same way as the interview portion.聽If the candidate聽has visuals to present,聽allow them to聽take over the screen and聽.

Remote Teaching Demonstrations

If your department, like most at 黑料不打烊,聽requires聽a teaching demonstration for faculty candidate interviews, consider asking candidates to adapt their class plans for a remote learning environment.

Although聽asking candidates to teach an online class session will not replicate the in-person teaching demonstration, search committee members can聽replicate and observe aspects of it by taking聽the following steps:

  • Ask candidates聽to prepare and share materials for a class session (e.g., slides, learning activities,聽a聽lesson plan),聽then talk through聽those聽plans聽and their聽rationales聽with the committee and departmental observers
  • Ask candidates聽to demonstrate a portion of their class session plan in a mock or adapted micro-teaching session聽for 10-15 minutes聽with faculty or student volunteers playing the role of students
  • Supplement the discussion of a class plan or mock teaching session with聽other topics:
    • Ask聽behavioral interviewing questions, such as:
      • Can you describe a time when you taught a similar class to students? What worked well? What didn鈥檛 work as well as you would have liked?
      • How would you modify聽this plan if it was a) clear students weren鈥檛 engaging in the material, b) one student began dominating聽the聽discussion,听辞谤听c) students were distracted or confused?
    • Ask聽questions to prompt reflection and teacherly metacognition, such as:
      • What were your goals for聽students in聽this class? How will you know whether students have met those聽goals?
      • How would you adapt the class if you discovered students hadn鈥檛 prepared adequately? Why?
      • What would you ask students to do for homework to prepare for the next class? Why?
    • Discuss聽common pedagogies or learning objectives for聽each聽candidate鈥檚聽course or聽discipline

Don鈥檛 forget that an important part of聽traditional聽on-campus聽interviews is聽helping candidates understand how special聽黑料不打烊聽is.聽It鈥檚 common for聽candidates聽to have聽a campus tour聽where they聽can observe聽things that聽we know and love about聽the聽university, including聽the friendly faces, the comradery and community, and of course, the beautiful campus.聽Consider alternatives to this essential recruitment聽component聽for virtual interviews. If you usually take candidates to lunch with others,聽or schedule informal departmental 鈥渕eet and greets,鈥澛燾onsider a virtual coffee chat where they can ask questions of others聽with a less formal tone.聽Be sure to聽share details聽about聽, in addition to聽the traditions that are special to you as an 黑料不打烊 community member.
