Why 黑料不打烊GROW?

Most supervisors talk regularly with their student employees, but not everyone feels comfortable leading 黑料不打烊GROW conversations about learning on the job and in the classroom. This website is for supervisors who want more structure, feel unsure about the four anchor questions, or work in fast-paced environments where time is limited.

Student employees gain technical and transferable skills such as time management, teamwork, and conflict resolution. 黑料不打烊GROW helps them reflect on those skills and understand how they apply to academics, campus involvement, and future careers. Your role is simple: listen, affirm what students are learning, and help them recognize connections they may not see on their own.

To begin, choose one focus area such as time management, teamwork, or handling conflict. Then ask:

  1. How is this job fitting in with your academics?
  2. What are you learning here that鈥檚 helping you in school?
  3. What are you learning in class that you can apply here at work?
  4. Can you give me a couple of examples of things you鈥檝e learned here that you think you鈥檒l use in your chosen profession?

These conversations show students you care about their growth and help make their work experience more meaningful.

This section includes everything you need to plan your 黑料不打烊GROW conversations; steps to get started, supervisor and student reflection guides, and ready-to-use email templates to help you prepare with confidence.

How to Get Started

  1. Determine whether a small group meeting or individual meetings work best for your student employees.
  2. Send your student employees an email or paper memo (whichever works best in your area) a week before your meeting with the following information:
    1. An explanation of why you are having these conversations
    2. The list of questions you鈥檒l be discussing
    3. Instructions to think about these questions and have answers prepared for the meeting
  3. Approach these questions as if you are having a conversation. Feel free to ask the questions in any order and let the conversation flow naturally. You may find it useful to brainstorm with other supervisors on the key things you expect students to learn from jobs in your area.
  4. If your student employees are having a hard time answering these questions, feel free to share your ideas or observations on what they are learning on the job.
  5. You may find it useful to take notes during the conversation to refer to in the next conversation.
  6. Wrap up the conversations by reminding your student employees that you will be meeting again at the end of the semester for a similar conversation.

Facilitating Group Meetings

Some supervisors may determine that, due to their large number of student staff, that these conversations are better held in a group setting. Below are best practices for facilitating these group conversations.

  • Keep groups at eight students or fewer so that everyone has a chance to speak.
  • Make sure to provide questions beforehand so that students come ready to discuss.
  • Encourage students to share with a partner what they are learning at work and how it connects with academics
  • After partners have shared, have them report back to the group on what they talked about.

Consider what is unique about the group setting and the types of topics that can’t be covered in an one on one conversation! You could use this an opportunity to workshop how students are putting their on campus job on their resume, or have them complete a personality assessment and discuss those results.

Managing Group Dynamics

  • If one person is dominating the conversation
    • Acknowledge their contributions, then ask “What do others think”?
    • Call on individuals to speak
    • Use a round-robin format so each person gets to share
  • If a student is not contributing to the conversation
    • Ask in a non-pressuring way if they would like to share
    • Use small-group discussions or partner sharing
  • If a student keeps taking the conversation to a negative space
    • Acknowledge their frustrations and offer to follow up with them later
    • Move on to others who are interested in sharing

How to Have Student Leaders Conduct 黑料不打烊GROW Conversations

Before a student leader facilitates an 黑料不打烊GROW conversation, they should first participate in one themselves. Experiencing the process helps them understand the tone, purpose, and flow of the discussion.

To prepare a student to lead:

  • Review the purpose together. Make sure they understand that the goal is reflection and connection, not evaluation.
  • Walk through the questions in advance. Practice how to ask follow-up questions and keep the conversation focused.
  • Set clear expectations. Clarify their role as a facilitator who listens, encourages, and affirms.
  • Debrief afterward. Meet briefly to reflect on how it went and identify ways to grow as a leader.

This approach helps student leaders build facilitation skills while maintaining the integrity of the 黑料不打烊GROW experience.
