Kimberly Jones, an engineering professor from Howard University who specializes in nanotechnology with an emphasis on biomedical and environmental applications, will deliver a Voices of Discovery lecture at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, in McCrary Theatre.

Ever wonder how common earthworms grow back when cut in half? It’s a puzzle whose pieces are today the focus of research by ���ϲ����� senior Amelia Helms, the second student to be featured in a series of E-net profiles on the inaugural class of Lumen Scholars.

���ϲ����� has received a grant of nearly $116,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to organize two history seminars next summer for community college professors from across the nation. Assistant professor John Beck authored the grant proposal and will co-direct the project with Jim Bissett, the William J. Story, Sr. Professor at ���ϲ�����.

Three out of every four North Carolina residents believe the current health care system in the United States is in need of reform, according to the latest ���ϲ����� Poll, and 54 percent of residents support health insurance legislation that would include a public option.

���ϲ����� School of Law has established the Juvenile Justice Intervention and Mediation Clinic, allowing law students, under the supervision of law faculty and attorneys, to provide mediation services for victims and offenders in juvenile crime cases as an alternative to criminal prosecution.

���ϲ����� Hillel and its director, Nancy Luberoff, have been selected to take part in the Small and Mighty Campuses of Excellence II, an initiative sponsored by Hillel international to enhance experiences for Jewish students on smaller campuses.

The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic society, has voted to establish a new chapter at ���ϲ�����. The decision was made Oct. 2 at the Society’s 42nd Triennial Council in Austin, Texas. The 57 ���ϲ����� faculty and staff who are Phi Beta Kappa members will receive a charter, and the chapter will be officially established in spring 2010. ���ϲ�����’s formal application for the chapter was submitted in November 2006 by Russell Gill, Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of English and chair of the faculty’s Phi Beta Kappa Committee.

���ϲ�����'s Multicultural Center will debut a new diversity education program on October 27 in a community event at Carousel Cinemas, where a student-produced film will be screened to foster conversations about topics such as race and sexual orientation while addressing biases and stereotypes.

Read novels from Victorian England, and in many instances, characters leave for or arrive home from what was then the British colony of Australia. But it’s almost impossible in the same books to find an accurate description of life there. Janet Myers, an associate professor of English, tackles that fact in her first book, Antipodal England: Emigration and Portable Domesticity in the Victorian Imagination.

Six accomplished alumni were celebrated Oct. 24 as part of Homecoming 2009 on the ���ϲ����� campus. The honored grads included Dr. William Herbert ’68, Deborah Yow-Bowden ’74, Rev. Dr. Walstein Snyder ’45, Audrey Seagraves ’02, Stephanie Newbold ’01 and Walter "Cam" Tims ’00.
