Sixty-eight students representing several majors have been participating this summer in a domestic summer internship programs in both Los Angeles and New York. While in their respective cities, students take an academic course on Mondays and complete internships the rest of the week. The structures of the nine-week programs vary, but students receive the same general experience, as they live, take classes and do internships in a major American city.

All films begin on the page. Someone, typically the screenwriter, has to put pen to paper and give words and movements and motivations to characters. In the nine-week ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ in Los Angeles summer program, it’s no different.

Last year, the three faculty and 18 students who were part of the renewed ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ in New York City program considered the nine-week summer internship experience a resounding success. That's why, coming into this summer, the returning instructors decided to leave the program mostly untouched.

Regularly pulling together 39 students spread across three classes in Los Angeles can sometimes be a logistical impossibility. For nine weeks during the summer, the students in the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ in LA program have to focus on their internships, class projects and other responsibilities. In essence, they build their own lives out west, if only a couple of months.

Tom Nelson, an associate professor in the School of Communications, is living for part of July 2011 in a campsite for people displaced by flooding in central North Dakota.
