Homecoming weekend brought nine School of Communications graduates back to campus to participate in a live panel discussion, providing current students with advice on how to use their ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ experiences to enhance their careers.

Produced by Jared Mayerson ’20 and Jordan Shaw ’20, “Leaving the Nest” tells the story of a North Carolina family that lives in yurts – portable, round tents. The film will be screened this spring on campus at the 2019 elondocs documentary showcase.

Turner Theatre | 4:15 p.m. 

The 2018 Sundance Film Festival selection was written and directed by Qasim Basir, who will participate in a Q&A session following the 4:15 p.m. screening on campus. 

The chair of the Communications Department served as one of three members on the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications accreditation site visit team at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. 

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s student news organization won several organizational and individual honors at a national college media conference held in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Sport Management Department hosted its annual fall internship forum on Oct. 1, featuring a lively panel discussion and poster session.

In collaboration with UNC professor Lucinda Austin, the School of Communications faculty member and strategic communications major examined corporate social advocacy and political activism through the case of DICK’s Sporting Goods and the company’s recent stance on gun control reform.

The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ alumnus oversaw the production of a full-length film titled “Virginia 12th,” which follows the story of Chris Hurst, a one-time news anchor who was thrust into national headlines when his girlfriend and colleague were murdered during a live news broadcast. The 64-minute documentary charts Hurst’s journey as he campaigns for political office.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, a Campus Consortium partner of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, hosted an Oct. 24 community lecture featuring Academy Award-winning multimedia journalist Emily Kassie.
