Ben Hannam knows a thing or two about graphic design 鈥 but could he distill decades of experience into a book in just six months? That was the challenge presented to the chair of the Department of Communication Design when Wiley Publishers contacted him to write 鈥溾 under a tight deadline.

Hannam, who spent two years writing his and another year on his second, had to drastically adjust his writing process to meet the accelerated timeline. Unlike his previous works, which leaned on a more narrative approach,聽鈥淕raphic Design For Dummies鈥 follows the signature style of the instructional reference series 鈥撀燾oncise, structured, and packed with bullet points and callouts.

Hannam credits the feedback and support he received from several recent students for helping him develop his new book, “Graphic Design for Dummies.”

鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 used to this type of writing format,鈥 Hannam said. 鈥淭hey gave me a book called 鈥榃riting a Dummies Book for Dummies.鈥欌

His latest book, which spans 272 pages, is designed to be accessible to a broad audience. The 黑料不打烊 professor envisions it as a resource for high school students working on their yearbooks, community college students exploring a career in design, and even professionals looking to refine their skills.

鈥淚 wanted to equip readers with tools they could carry into their programs, their careers 鈥撀爎eally, into any design project,鈥 Hannam said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 full of things I wish someone had told me when I was starting out.鈥

The far-reaching influence of the聽鈥淔or Dummies鈥澛爏eries was a major draw for Hannam. “If you go to any Barnes & Noble from here to California, you’ll find the聽鈥楧ummies鈥櫬爏eries, whether it鈥檚 for fixing your car or getting an iPad,” he said. The chance to contribute to such a well-known and widely distributed brand was one he couldn鈥檛 pass up.

Collaboration played a key role in the book鈥檚 development. Several students, including recent graduates Matt Newberry 鈥24, Hadley Kaeyer 鈥24, Shelby Bryant 鈥24, Caroline Mitchell 鈥24 and Ryan Margaret Lee 鈥24, contributed drawings, designs and feedback.

鈥淣ot only does it feel incredibly validating and rewarding to be acknowledged by a faculty member that you respect, but it felt even more surreal to contribute to a project with such widespread distribution like 鈥楧ummies,鈥欌 Newberry said. 鈥淎s a designer, seeing your work and name out in the world is the best feeling 鈥 even if it鈥檚 just some sketches.鈥

Shortly after publication, Hannam said he received an email from Lee congratulating him and sharing that she bought five copies to share with friends. Even Hannam鈥檚 eldest child served as a review reader.

The response to聽鈥淕raphic Design For Dummies鈥澛爃as been overwhelmingly positive. Before its release, the book secured 800 preorders 鈥撀爉ore than any of Hannam鈥檚 previous works.

鈥淚鈥檝e had people coming out of the woodwork asking me to sign their copies,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 something new for me.鈥

Despite the intense writing process, Hannam is proud of the final product and its potential to make graphic design more approachable. 鈥淭his aligns with my goal of being helpful and sharing what I know,鈥 he said. 鈥淎t the end of the day, if it helps people get started in design, then I鈥檝e done my job.鈥
