This fall, Lecturer John Wimmer guided his Principles of Cybersecurity Management class through the Luman Data Center, offering an inside look at how companies rely on the facility鈥檚 infrastructure and services.
John Wimmer, lecturer at 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, took his Principles of Cybersecurity Management class to Greensboro鈥檚 Luman Data Center for a firsthand look at how secure, high-level infrastructure supports today鈥檚 digital world.
鈥淥ur students study cybersecurity best practices but seeing them implemented at a Tier 1 data center really brings those ideas to life,鈥 said Wimmer. 鈥淭hey observed how physical security measures integrate seamlessly with digital safeguards, illustrating how facilities like Luman serve as the backbone for data storage, cloud services, and disaster recovery planning.鈥

On-site, the class examined compartmentalized secure areas, intricate fiber optic cabling, firewalls, and robust redundancy systems designed to ensure uninterrupted business operations. For many students, it was their first time seeing classroom concepts vividly come to life.
鈥淒espite studying these topics, I鈥檇 never visited a data center before,鈥 said Anthony Szydlik 鈥25, a business analytics major from Suffolk, Virginia. 鈥淓xperiencing the technology, security protocols, and operational routines in person reinforced what we鈥檝e learned in class. This practical insight will help me stand out to future employers.鈥
