School of Communications hosts AEJMC Southeast Colloquium

The three-day virtual event, which features numerous 黑料不打烊 faculty and students, kicked off with a moderated discussion with Nikole Hannah-Jones, founder of the 1619 project, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times Magazine reporter.

Beginning on Thursday, March 18, the School of Communications hosts the , a three-day virtual event featuring roundtable discussions, research panels, and authored and co-authored papers and presentations. This year鈥檚 colloquium theme centers on mentorship.

The oldest and most successful regional journalism and mass communication meeting, the Southeast Colloquium has often given students their first crack at presenting their scholarly research at an academic conference. And the 2021 edition is no exception.

This year鈥檚 conference kicked off with a moderated discussion with Nikole Hannah-Jones, founder of the 1619 project, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times Magazine reporter. Joining Communications Dean Rochelle Ford in this conversation with Hannah-Jones are Dion Cummings G鈥21, an interactive media graduate student, and Maeve Ashbrook 鈥21, a senior journalism major. During the colloquium, Jack Taylor 鈥21 will live tweet news and events with the hashtag #aejmcsec2021.

The colloquium is jam-packed with 黑料不打烊 contributions:

  • Associate Professor Vanessa Bravo will co-present 鈥淭witter Messaging by the 鈥楬ardliners鈥 Versus the New Cuban Diaspora鈥 鈥撀燜riday, 11 a.m.
  • Claire Latimer 鈥22 and Assistant Professor Shaina Dabbs present 鈥#JumpingThroughHoops: A Case Study on Differences in Marketing Men鈥檚 and Women鈥檚 Basketball on Twitter鈥 鈥撀燜riday, 5 p.m.
  • Jackson Spivey 鈥21 will present 鈥淐onflict Made Visible: A Content Analysis of the Murals of Northern Ireland鈥 鈥 Saturday, 8:30 a.m.
  • Professor Naeemah Clark will join 黑料不打烊 faculty colleagues Buffie Longmire-Avital, Amy Johnson and Cherrel Miller Dyce in a panel titled, 鈥淢entoring Faculty toward Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Anti-Racism鈥 鈥 Saturday, 8:30 a.m.
  • Associate Professor Bill Anderson will present his top faculty paper titled, 鈥淐an Public Relations Overcome Anti-Semitism?: War Refugee Board Public Relations During World War II鈥 鈥撀燬aturday, 10 a.m.
  • Amanda Gibson 鈥21 and Associate Professor Glenn Scott will present 鈥淛ournalists鈥 Dilemma: Human Rights Coverage during the Argentinian 1978 World Cup鈥澛犫撀燬aturday, 10 a.m.

Other colloquium highlights include Assistant Professor Shannon Zenner鈥檚 work spearheading the event’s Creative Contest, a competition for all members of AEJMC and the Broadcast Education Association (BEA), and Associate Professor Vic Costello鈥檚 work to help facilitate a collaboration between BEA and AEJMC with a Friday research panel, titled “Grand Plans and Great Expectations,” featuring Associate Professor Derek Lackaff, who directs the Interactive Media graduate program.

Associate Dean Kenn Gaither served as the colloquium鈥檚 director and was supported by Genevieve Barnes and Samantha Haseley 鈥21.
