Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students

  • BASICS or听Brief Alcohol Screening Intervention for College Studentsis a confidential and judgment-free setting where students examine their personal drinking behavior.
  • BASICS听consists of two, 50-minute individual sessions with a trained facilitator.
  • BASICS is evidence-based and provides personalized feedback to help students experiencing negative outcomes related to alcohol and substance use take a critical look at their choices to reduce future risks.

Why participate in BASICS?

BASICS gives you the opportunity to explore your level of risk, compare your alcohol use to other college students, identify possible changes, and help you reduce future risk of developing alcohol-related problems.

Who can attend?

  • Any studentconcerned with their personal alcohol or other substance use.
  • Any studentreferred by university faculty and/or staff(coaches, program administrators, counselors, health practitioners,听etc.).
  • Any student听referred by the Office of Student Conduct due to an alcohol or drug policy violation.

BASICS is not therapy or substance use treatment.

Confidentiality

The information you share as part of the BASICS program is private. Any details regarding your past or current history of substance use will not be reported to the Office of Student Conduct for a disciplinary referral.

Office of Student Conduct Referrals

  • If you are sanctioned to complete BASICS through the Office of Student Conduct, be sure to communicate promptly with your BASICS facilitator. Repeated cancellations, failure to respond and/or to appear on time for meetings may result in an honor code charge of 鈥淔ailure to Comply.鈥
  • Once you complete BASICS, an email notification will be sent to the Office of Student Conduct.
