CNC routers are computer-controlled machines that carve and cut聽wood, foam, some plastics and metal. It鈥檚 basically a spinning drill bit that removes material. While 3D printers represent additive forms of fabrication (they slowly add material where none exists), CNC machines represent a subtractive form of fabrication (because they remove existing material to create a product).

What can I make with a CNC router?

You can make all types of things with a CNC router 鈥 from聽聽to jewelry聽and 聽鈥 similar to the laser engraver. The difference is the CNC router can handle thicker and larger material.

Location

Maker Hub 鈥 Downtown

Access

The CNC router works a little differently from most tools in the Maker Hub. While many tools are available anytime we鈥檙e open (once you鈥檝e completed the training), the CNC router can聽only be used when a CNC Tool Team member is on shift. For more details, please refer to the training below.

Safety

The CNC router is located in the Safety Zone so please review the聽Safety Zone rules on our policies webpage.

Training

Ready to start carving with the CNC router? walks you through the basics of setup, safety, and operation. You鈥檒l design and cut a custom plywood plaque in 60 minutes.聽
