Based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover, when 38 planes carrying thousands of people from around the globe were diverted to Gander鈥檚 airstrip on September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar and the recognition that we鈥檙e part of a global family. Brian Hare, 鈥淪urvival of the Friendliest鈥

Liberal Arts Forum Lecture
Brian Hare is a renowned evolutionary anthropologist and professor at Duke University who directs the Duke Canine Cognition Center. He is famous for his research on dog intelligence, having co-authored the book 鈥淭he Genius of Dogs鈥 and popularized the 鈥淪urvival of the Friendliest鈥 theory regarding dog domestication. Just as humans recognize intention, Hare says dogs also recognize and respond to human requests, words, gestures and intentions, and they work to solve problems. This new understanding of dogs has also revealed how friendliness is the key to our own origins and future.

2026-27 黑料不打烊 Speaker Series 鈥淏old Leadership鈥
A United States Marine and the youngest living recipient of the Medal of Honor, Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter is recognized for extraordinary heroism during his service in Afghanistan. In 2010, he sustained life-threatening injuries after throwing himself on a grenade to protect a fellow Marine, an act of valor that led to years of recovery and more than 40 surgeries. After recuperating, Carpenter set and achieved ambitious personal goals, including completing a college degree, running a marathon and traveling internationally. He is the author of the memoir 鈥淵ou Are Worth It: Building a Life Worth Fighting For,鈥 which chronicles his journey of resilience and purpose.
