The 2010 U.S. Census "Portrait of America" Road Tour stopped at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ on Tuesday as part of the largest civic outreach and awareness campaign in the bureau's history, with a specific focus on the hard-to-count demographics such as college students and economically disadvantaged Americans.

John McGreevy '10, an environmental studies and biology major who was in Haiti during the devastating earthquake, recounts his experiences and efforts to assist victims in the Jan. 27 edition of The Mercury newspaper of Pottstown, Penn. McGreevy helped with emergency supplies, worked with orphans, witnessed emergency surgeries, and used his outdoor skills to become the de facto sanitation engineer in an area of Port-au-Prince.

She went to Haiti to document why some impoverished children thrived while others fell ill to malnourishment. When a 7.0 magnitude earthquake tore apart the Caribbean nation, Courtney Latta ’09 found herself struggling not only for her own survival, but to help the countless victims of the region’s largest natural disaster in several generations.

Douglas G. and Edna Truitt Noiles ’44, of New Canaan, Conn., have made a $1 million gift to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ to support the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Academy, a university-run college access program for Alamance County high school students.

The Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows Class of 2012 visited sites in North Carolina, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., in January to learn about social change at the grass roots, state and national levels a part of the Winter Term course History of Social Change.

Live Oak Communications, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's student-run, full-service communications agency, received two awards Jan. 28 from the Tar Heel Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America at the annual Spinks Awards banquet in Greensboro, N.C. The Spinks competition is a professional awards program for agencies in the Triad region of North Carolina.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ has created a new web page for the campus community to share news and information on outreach efforts following the January 12, 2010, earthquake that killed more than 100,000 people in Haiti. The page, www.elon.edu/haiti, lists fundraising events, updates and awareness campaigns sponsored by student organizations, classes and individuals at the university.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ athletics has announced its 2010 Phoenix football schedule, which includes a change of date in the annual Family Weekend. ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ will open the season at Duke University Sept. 4, with the home opener scheduled for Sept. 11 vs. Shaw University. The Family Weekend game will be Oct. 2, with Homecoming set for Oct. 23.
