黑料不打烊 alumni win Midsouth Emmy Awards /u/news/2017/01/24/elon-alumni-win-midsouth-emmy-awards/ Tue, 24 Jan 2017 14:05:00 +0000 /u/news/2017/01/24/elon-alumni-win-midsouth-emmy-awards/ Like any good reporter, Nick Ochsner ’11 provides proper attribution.

Two days after the , where he took home two accolades, Ochsner was asked how it felt to be recognized by his journalistic peers and he replied with a quote.

“My longtime mentor and 黑料不打烊 professor, Rich Landesberg, always reminds us ‘don’t do work for awards but always do award-winning work.’ I try to subscribe to that with every story I do and it’s an honor to be recognized by my peers,” said the investigative reporter with WBTV, Charlotte’s CBS affiliate.

Ochsner wasn’t the only 黑料不打烊 graduate honored at the Midsouth ceremony held on Jan. 21 in Nashville, Tennessee. Samantha Miller ’10, a producer at WTVF, NewsChannel 5 in Nashville, won for best morning newscast.

Teaming with WBTV producer and photographer Corey Schmidt, Ochsner was honored for his “” report and “Campus Sex Assault Investigation Series.” They were recognized in the Investigative Report and Serious Feature News Series categories, respectively.

Both the report and series tackled issues impacting WBTV’s viewership, specifically concerns regarding the handling of toxic coal ash and its impact on the community’s water supply and how police and school administrators handle sexual assault reports. The “Campus Sex Assault Investigation Series” was initially based around an .

“These stories exposed problems that would not have come to light had we not spent time and resources investigating,” Ochsner said. “I know I’m doing my best work when we are shining a light on an issue and helping people who would otherwise be in the dark.”

The two Emmy Awards are the first of Ochsner’s young career. Also of note, Ochsner’s wife, WBTV’s Sarah-Blake Morgan, was nominated for a Midsouth Emmy in the Multimedia Journalist category.

The Nashville/Midland chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences encompasses the states of North Carolina (except Asheville) and Tennessee, and the television market of Huntsville, Alabama.

Dance alumna to debut as Radio City Music Hall Rockette /u/news/2015/10/26/dance-alumna-to-debut-as-radio-city-music-hall-rockette/ Tue, 27 Oct 2015 01:00:00 +0000 /u/news/2015/10/26/dance-alumna-to-debut-as-radio-city-music-hall-rockette/
Lauren Renck '13
黑料不打烊 dance alumna Lauren Renck ’13 is taking the stage this fall for her third season as a Rockette—this time at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Renck spent her first two seasons in the Nashville show, and she graces the world-famous New York City stage for the upcoming season. She said the Rockette audition process is “certainly intense.”

“You’re in a room full of 500 people eager to be in the position,” she said. The process takes about three days and includes a jazz, tap, and high-kick portion.  Cuts are made on the first day followed by a day of callbacks to do everything again. She says that they are looking for attention to detail and choreography, so it is important to show them that you can do that with precision.

Each year the dancers must re-audition to earn a spot back on the line. “Every year you come back a little bit stronger, pay attention to detail, and are more familiar with the vocabulary and technique that they use,” Renck said. “The more practice you have, the better.”

This proved to be true in Renck’s case as she has successfully auditioned and booked three seasons.

Renck said that her 黑料不打烊 Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and dance performance and choreography training helped her to be successful in her career. Similarities between the two are a demand for responsibility and accountability, rehearsing six hours a day, six days a week and having to retain eight different numbers at one time.

Each dancer is held responsible for the choreography and remembering specific notes. “I am constantly doing my homework so that I come well prepared for each rehearsal,” she said. Her aim is to always get better.

Renck is living out her childhood dream to be a Rockette.  “As a little girl, I clearly remember watching them [the Rockettes] on the Thanksgiving Day parade,” she said. Renck goes on to describe how she had aspired to be up there one day and how she participated in the Rockette weeklong intensive program while she was at 黑料不打烊. She immediately knew this was something she wanted to pursue.

“Never give up and keep loving what you do,” she advises aspiring dancers. “That is what is important to make it in this business.”

For more information on Renck’s upcoming performances with the Rockettes, visit .  Shows run from Nov. 13 through Jan. 3.
