The National Science Foundation has awarded ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ chemistry professor Joel Karty a three-year, $181,000 research grant to work with undergraduates assisting him in his ongoing study of two types of molecular phenomena that govern chemical stability.

Four students from the chemistry department presented their research last weekend at the Southeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (SERMACS) in New Orleans.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ professors Laura Roselle and Joel Karty have been selected as Senior Faculty Research Fellows for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ senior Anthony Rizzuto has been named the recipient of a 2010 Eastern Analytical Symposium Student Research Award, a highly competitive national prize in the chemistry field given each year to six undergraduate researchers.

He’s now turning his attention to an even bigger stage as the new president of Phi Lambda Upsilon, the national chemistry honor society with tens of thousands of active members across the United States.

Civitan International of North Carolina this summer honored J. Earl Danieley, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's president emeritus and a professor of chemistry, with its Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award.

The United Church of Chapel Hill is celebrating its centennial anniversary, and on May 23, 2010, the church unveiled a bronze plaque listing all of its former pastors, including ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ president emeritus J. Earl Danieley.

For the second consecutive year, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ junior Amanda Leigh Clark has been recognized with an honorable mention in the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to students planning for careers in science, math or engineering.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s 2010 Founders Day celebrations concluded Thursday, March 11, with a “fireside chat” with President Emeritus J. Earl Danieley ’46. Members of the audience were treated to tales about Danieley’s life and his many experiences at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ as student, faculty member, administrator and president.

Kathryn Mansfield Matera, associate professor of chemistry, has been selected as the third recipient of the A.L. Hook Emerging Scholar Professorship in Science and Mathematics at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ. The professorship provides funding and opportunities for faculty to mentor students and involve undergraduates in research and special projects.
