Joan Dawson, executive assistant to the vice president of University Advancement

黑料不打烊 has been like a family for Joan Dawson, both figuratively and literally. She聽was first introduced to 黑料不打烊 in August 1983 as a transfer student from Appalachian State University. She met her husband as an undergraduate. Her daughter and son-in-law are both 黑料不打烊 alums and 30 years after she arrived as a student, she returned as program assistant to the Office of Cultural & Special Programs.

“My time at 黑料不打烊 has come full circle 鈥 student, parent, staff member,” Dawson said.

Dawson said she will always treasure the lifelong friendships she’s made at 黑料不打烊. One specific memory that comes to mind for her is a 2017 staff trip to London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. Even years after the trip, she still speaks to some of her fellow travelers.

In retirement, Dawson plans to spend as much time as possible with her children and two grandsons and “keeping my crossed that more grandchildren are on the way!” She also hopes to volunteer more at church and in the community, travel more and write a recipe book with her Dad.

“I think I’ll stay pretty busy,” Dawson said.

Brian Fitts has spent 15 years at 黑料不打烊 as an AV technician, and wrapped up his final 黑料不打烊 commencement as a staff member by assisting with the audio and visual aspects of the ceremony. Watching a new class of graduates cross the stage each year has been the highlight of his time at 黑料不打烊 and a memory he will value most.

During retirement, Fitts said he hopes to “spend more time with family, get more involved in my music and travel.”

Chris Fulkerson

Assistant Vice President for Administrative Services

Chris Fulkerson, assistant vice president for administrative services

In 1982, Chris Fulkerson thought his time at 黑料不打烊 would last only a year before venturing back into broadcast radio. But Fulkerson saw that 黑料不打烊 was a 鈥減lace on the move鈥 with incredible vision.聽Having been at 黑料不打烊 during four different strategic initiatives, he鈥檚 been privileged to be a part of that transformation.

鈥淎t the end of each strategic plan, 黑料不打烊 was a different place. So, I have worked at four different institutions without ever having to leave 黑料不打烊,鈥 Fulkerson said.

In 41 years at 黑料不打烊, Fulkerson said his favorite memory was being honored by the library staff at a luncheon before taking another position with the university. At the luncheon, he was gifted a gold 黑料不打烊 College watch, one of his fondest 黑料不打烊 mementos.

In retirement, his plans are pretty simple.聽鈥淭ravel with my wife. Play with my new grandson. Travel with my wife. Consulting. Travel with my wife. Work with my church.鈥 And last but not least, 鈥淭ravel with my wife.鈥

Robert “Clay” Hassard

Senior Associate Director of Athletics

Robert “Clay” Hassard, senior associate director of athletics

Clay Hassard transferred to 黑料不打烊 in 1982 as a student-athlete from UNC-Chapel Hill. Hassard said 黑料不打烊 provided the right academic and athletic opportunities for him to thrive.

After graduating, he was hired as an assistant football coach in 1985. Two years later, he assumed the role of Assistant Director of Admissions and Financial Planning in addition to coach. He ended up leaving coaching and entering athletics administration as the Assistant Athletic Director in 1990. In 1999, he was promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director, a title he has held for the last 23 years.

“What made 黑料不打烊 special for me was the relationships I built with an exceptional group of faculty and staff members, all dedicated to the enhancement of the student experience,” Hassard said.

In retirement, Hassard said, “I am looking forward to some leisure activities and spending time with my family.”

Tallulah Shaw first arrived at 黑料不打烊 on Sept. 11, 1989, after her brother, also a staff member, suggested that she apply. More than three decades later, 黑料不打烊 has been like a second home for Shaw and her connections with the many people on campus show that.

“One of my favorite memories is some of the students that called me “Mom” and how we’ve kept in touch with each other and all the friends I made along the way,” Shaw said.

Her retirement plans involve “travel and spending time my daughter.”

Ren茅 Summers

Program Assistant, NC Campus Engagement

Ren茅 Summers, program assistant, NC Campus Engagement

Ren茅 Summers began working in the Chaplain’s Office in 1995 and saw 黑料不打烊 as a place where she could combine her organizational skills with her love for ministry and helping others. “It was the perfect opportunity for me,” she said.

After 16 years, she shifted her focus to the NC Campus Engagement which allowed her to have an impact on community engagement statewide. “I have been blessed to work with great visionaries and be immersed in work that I love at 黑料不打烊.”

Summers said she’s experienced many great moments while at 黑料不打烊, and each one is connected to the relationships she has been blessed with over the years.

“Some friends have now retired, some will work many more years, some have passed away, but I will cherish them all in my heart,” Summers said.

In retirement, Summers is excited to have more time with her husband, children and seven grandchildren. “I will continue to lead water aerobics classes at the YMCA, volunteer at Hope Church and live out my passion for serving by helping people clean out their homes during times of transition,” she said.

黑料不打烊 courses shift to online learning /u/news/2020/03/23/elon-courses-shift-to-online-learning-today/ Mon, 23 Mar 2020 10:00:02 +0000 /u/news/?p=788494 黑料不打烊 faculty and undergraduate students resume their courses today, but with a significant change. In response to the national coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the university has moved its courses online, with faculty members employing technology and creativity to engage with students during the weeks ahead.

The shift to online learning is part of an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19 among 黑料不打烊 students, faculty, staff and the community. The university is relying upon social distancing measures to reduce the risk of exposure and has told students to not return to campus after Spring Break if they don鈥檛 have to, while implementing other operational changes.

鈥満诹喜淮蜢 is committed to completing the semester and ensuring that all students can fulfill their academic requirements and degree progress,鈥 President Connie Ledoux Book said in a March 11 message to the university community announcing the change. 鈥淎lthough the decision to alter classes was difficult as it will impact 黑料不打烊鈥檚 residential learning environment for a few weeks, we are confident these measures will help to protect all members of our community.鈥

Since the shift to online learning was announced nearly two weeks ago, faculty members have been learning about new technological tools they can tap into, collaborating on methods to shift assignments and interactions online and learning how to best connect with students and each other.

Paul Miller, assistant provost for academic operations and communications, said since the change was announced, he鈥檚 seen widespread collaboration across the university as faculty members share their own plans, solicit ideas from each other, learn to use new tools and find innovative ways to connect and communicate. The focus is on delivering the best learning experience as we can for students, while integrating flexibility and adaptability.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 overstate the commitment of our faculty to delivering this remote teaching during a very complex time,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really astounding. We need to recognize that this is happening in real time, and across all our programs. It鈥檚 great work.鈥

Members of the Belk Library team participating in a training webinar about the shift to online learning.

Miller points to how his colleagues in the Department of Exercise Science turned to the Microsoft Teams platform to collaborate. Faculty members shared their own plans for how they were going to transition to online, and sought input for how previously in-person activities might be adapted to online. They talked about how to support students

during this transition, and also how to support each other. Tip sheets for deploying new technological tools were posted, as well as links to resources to support online learning.

Associate Professor Amy Allocco from the Department of Religious Studies recently shared about how she has built upon personal connections among students to shift her senior seminar online. Read more about her efforts here.

The university has ramped up its technological support and training resources, with webinars and training sessions in the weeks leading up to the resumption of classes on March 23. That includes work by Teaching and Learning Technologies to assist faculty as they prepare for online coursework by producing videos and helping to deploy online content.

Associate Professor of Computer Science Shannon Duvall that she鈥檚 tapped into Teaching and Learning Technologies webinars to support her efforts to move online. 鈥淚 will try to make choices that will hopefully benefit everyone as fairly and equally as possible, giving everyone what they need to succeed in the course,鈥 Duvall said. 鈥淚 want to be as creative as I can to make sure I am giving an 黑料不打烊-quality engaged experience online.鈥

The university鈥檚 Technology Service Desk will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Along with the extended hours, the Technology Service Desk and is pulling in additional personnel. More details about the technological support efforts are available here.

The university鈥檚 COVID-19 website has served as a clearinghouse of university communications and information, including a section devoted to Faculty Teaching Information and an extensive Faculty Resources for Remote Learning resource page.

鈥淓verything I am seeing as we go through this challenging process supports the idea that we genuinely care for each other as a community,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淲e understand this is unusual, it鈥檚 stressful, it鈥檚 a very different environment, and there鈥檚 an acknowledgement that it鈥檚 a lot of work.鈥

黑料不打烊 prepares students for transition to online instruction /u/news/2020/03/12/elon-prepares-students-for-transition-to-online-instruction/ Thu, 12 Mar 2020 21:01:34 +0000 /u/news/?p=787352 As Spring Break approaches, 黑料不打烊 faculty are sharing plans with students about how their courses will take shape online in the coming weeks. In response to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, the university announced on March 11 that all undergraduate courses will transition from classroom instruction to online learning mode for the two weeks following Spring Break (which begins March 14 and concludes March 22).

There are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus at 黑料不打烊, and the university plans to resume normal classroom instruction on Monday, April 6. In the meantime, the university is working to ensure a smooth transition to online learning for faculty and students.

Professors are individually updating their students about what to expect, since different courses will use different modes for online instruction. At the start of her COM 100 Communications in a Global Age class, Professor of Communications Janna Anderson told students they will continue their work via Moodle and email during the online learning period. Though her students don鈥檛 have to complete their work during the normal class time, they will have deadlines for tests and assignments.

鈥淵ou鈥檒l feel better, you鈥檒l be more confident and you鈥檒l feel more comfortable if you stay on top of all your studies just as if you were on campus,鈥 she said.

Anderson鈥檚 students will take their mid-term exam and quizzes on Moodle. They will be able to log in during a window of several hours to accommodate students in different time zones, but will have a set amount of time to complete the tests once they log in. She will also email her complete lecture notes, links to required videos to view and assignment details the day before their regularly scheduled class time.

鈥淲e want to reassure you that we are maintaining the same level of rigor and quality that you normally experience in a classroom setting,鈥 Anderson told her students.

The Faculty Resources page on 黑料不打烊鈥檚 coronavirus website was built as a resource to assist faculty as they prepare to teach remotely. The page offers best practices for a successful transition, a guide to technology tools and services and a list of valuable campus resources.

鈥淭eaching and Learning Technologies is partnering with a number of academic areas, as teaching online, just like face-to-face instruction, requires more than just using technology effectively,鈥 said Kelly Reimer, director of Teaching and Learning Technologies. 鈥淲e are partnering with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, Belk Library, Koenigsberger Learning Center, the Writing Center, Moodle Advisory Group Members, Kyle Altmann (IT鈥檚 Faculty Fellow for Technology) and other groups to bring holistic support and training to faculty.鈥

TLT will offer a number of in-person and virtual training sessions to help faculty quickly prepare to teach online. Faculty are encouraged to focus their efforts on using the Moodle learning management system and WebEx conferencing program as their primary tools to minimize potential challenges.

In addition to the group training sessions, faculty will also have access to individual/course-specific consultations and topic-based support. TLT will continually update the Faculty Resources page, Reimer said, as well as evaluate needs and offer additional training, support and services as those needs emerge.

鈥淲e are here to assist and recognize that this is a challenging circumstance,鈥 Reimer said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e provided extra training to our student staff to work with faculty. Some of our student staff will even remain here on campus next week to provide support. We鈥檝e worked with our vendors and partners to make sure systems and services operate as normal, since there will be extra traffic on these systems.鈥

黑料不打烊's 2018 staff retirees recognized /u/news/2018/05/24/elons-2018-staff-retirees-recognized/ Thu, 24 May 2018 19:35:00 +0000 /u/news/2018/05/24/elons-2018-staff-retirees-recognized/

黑料不打烊 celebrates the contributions of seven staff members who are retiring this year after serving the university in a wide variety of ways during their careers.

Lorraine Allen, director of accounting

Allen joined the staff at 黑料不打烊 College in July 1979 after receiving a call that there was an opening in the accounting office and they would like her to come in for an interview. Allen says she hadn’t applied for the job, but decided to at least go for the interview, and “the rest is history.”

During her time at 黑料不打烊, Allen would rise from accountant to chief accountant and retires as director of accounting at what is now 黑料不打烊, having seen the university grow by leaps and bounds during her nearly four decades here.

Asked for her favorite memory, Allen says it’s hard to pick just one. “I will truly miss the great people who make up 黑料不打烊,” she says. “I could not begin to name all of the 黑料不打烊 folks who have had such a great impact on my life but I treasure each of the many wonderful friendships that I am blessed to have made at 黑料不打烊.”

After retiring on June 30, Allen plans to spend time with family and friends, pursue service opportunities and complete unfinished paintings and stained glass projects she is working on. She’ll be spending time playing duplicate bridge, gardening and hopes to also travel.

Judy Bowes, accounts payable

Bowes has spent 20 years at 黑料不打烊 working in the accounts payable department in the accounting office.

“What I’ll miss most about 黑料不打烊 is my co-workers, all the fun things they do, and the beautiful campus,” Bowes says.

Robert Buchholz, associate vice president for facilities management and director of physical plant

As Ed Eng, director of physical plant, was preparing to leave 黑料不打烊, he gave Robert Buchholz a call. It was 2008, and Buchholz was trying to return to his home state of North Carolina. Buchholz recalls Eng telling him that he should come to 黑料不打烊 because “this was a very special place,” Buchholz recalls.

“Ed was right,” Buchholz says.

That was a decade ago, and now Buchholz is preparing to retire from 黑料不打烊 at the end of May. It was a time filled with “many wonderful memories,” in particular the family the 黑料不打烊 community is, Buchholz says.

“As a part of Physical Plant, what I will remember is how the Physical Plant staff has responded to so many challenges and events, and how we do things as a world class team,” Buchholz says. “The move-ins, the commencements, the homecomings, the admissions events, the bats, the ice storms — there are so many times when the TEAM worked together and made things happen. And they always did it with such a positive attitude. They are an amazing team.”

Buchholz started his work career selling newspapers at the age of 12, and now looks forward to traveling. “My immediate plans after May 31 and 53 years of working is to be adventurist in traveling,” he says. “Pam and I are going traveling this summer to the Colorado River/Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park and the Northwest.  We will be visiting kids, seven grandkids and family.”

Buchholz said he’ll also be finding time for “a little fishing, golfing and visiting shipmates in various locations around the country.”

When not traveling, he and his wife, Pam, will continue to call Burlington home.  “Pam and I love it here because of the people, 黑料不打烊 and we think North Carolina is the best place in the world to live,” Buchholz says.

Kay Carroll, service desk analyst

Carroll came to 黑料不打烊 in 1988 as a switchboard operator in large part becasue it was closer to where she lived. Now after 30 years at the university, she’ll be retiring at the end of this month.

She’s served the university in a variety of ways through the years, moving from switchboard operator to become a secretary in academic computing, a PC software support specialist and now retires as a service desk analyst.

“I will miss the people that I work with,” Carroll says. “We have worked together for many years, and they are like family to me.”

In retirement, Carroll plans to spend more time with her grandchildren and work on projects around the house. She’ll also be making time to visit her brother and sister-in-law at the beach.

Billy Crayton, shuttle bus operator

For the past 20 years, Crayton has been behind the wheel, shuttling students, faculty, staff and visitors around 黑料不打烊’s campus.

As a shuttle bus operator, Crayton has been known for his dedication to the job, often willing to step in to cover shifts and ensure 黑料不打烊 could meet the transportation needs of the community, said Drew Hambright, transportation support technician, in his remarks honoring Crayton at the annual Staff Appreciation Day. Hambright estimates that Crayton has driven more than 400,000 miles during his time at 黑料不打烊.

“He would often come through in a crunch,” Hambright said.

Bruce Nelson, director of counseling services

Nelson concluded his service to 黑料不打烊 on Jan. 31 after joining the university in April 2001.

During the past 17 years, Nelson was instrumental in the growth and development of the Department of Counseling Services, and moved to the role of counselor in 2016.

“Bruce has provided exemplary attention and caring to students and their families during the past 17 years, many of whom where wrestling with the most difficult and debilitating circumstances,” said Jan Lynn Patterson, associate vice president for student life and dean of students at the time of Nelson’s retirement.

Also retiring this year is Linda Wegwart, senior buyer.

Dan Harder takes the stage at national IT conference /u/news/2016/06/14/dan-harder-takes-the-stage-at-national-it-conference/ Tue, 14 Jun 2016 19:15:00 +0000 /u/news/2016/06/14/dan-harder-takes-the-stage-at-national-it-conference/
Dan Harder
Dan Harder, director of campus technology support and and assistant chief information officer, recently represented 黑料不打烊 at the Miami 2016 Connect Conference for EDUCAUSE: the leading nonprofit organization for those seeking to ‘advance higher education through the use of information technology.’

In addition to leading two of the main stage speeches Harder was also a part of the team responsible for conceptualization and execution of the entire conference. This is the third year that Harder has spoken at EDUCAUSE and the first that he has been on the planning committee.

Who is Dan Harder?

As Director of Campus Technology Support and Assistant CIO Dan Harder is in charge of making sure that technology on campus is running smoothly. He’s a part of any conversation concerning the future of technology at 黑料不打烊, and is responsible for ensuring that new technology complies with 黑料不打烊’s sustainability goals.

Although currently working in information technology (I.T.) Harder actually received his undergraduate degree in Music Education and was originally trained as a band director. Although the academic jump may seem unusual, there’s a reason that EDUCAUSE asked him to speak. From conducting classics to contemplating conduits his ability to lead a team to success is why he was asked to give speeches on leadership and motivation and on the use of analytics as a tool for decision making.

During his speech on leadership and motivation Harder made sure to avoid just telling people what to do or how to think. Instead he led a discussion, a method that he believes is vital in being an effective leader. “Just let people talk, help facilitate dissenting opinions. I’m not going to sit back and tell them what I think, or why I’m right. Let them discuss it, figure it out, and see the options.” Harder was pleased to hear that the reviews after his session were overwhelmingly positive.

Why all the fuss?

The Connect Conference in Miami was one of a few smaller conferences held by EDUCAUSE and was attended by about 600 professionals. Harder believes a conference of this size creates “more of a cohort, community type feel”.

Harder believes that EDUCAUSE is “the place to be” as a senior leader in IT. It offers the opportunity to network with other professionals, learn new methods, and put 黑料不打烊 on the national stage. With campus pursuing so much innovative technological design it’s hugely beneficial for 黑料不打烊 to collaborate and compare results with other similar institutions. In this way we can find out what we’re doing better, how we can improve, and Harder can access a variety of colleagues that he uses to “make sure I’m not crazy.”

So why does 黑料不打烊 stand out at these events? Harder believes it’s because “黑料不打烊 is constantly hungry, constantly trying to make things better. I think it’s good to show people our viewpoint, and why 黑料不打烊 is the way it is.”

The session summary had several outcomes:

Consider how academic systems can create web applications to support academic and administrative needs including a standardized process to handle the project life cycle with agile development methodologies to design and implement approved projects. Explore a case study partnership that transformed a print journal of first-year writing to a custom web-based publication that blended a variety of media, afforded pedagogical scaffolding, broadened accessibility, and reduced student textbook costs. Hear about how co-budget and shared license requests benefit the campus-wide system and meet institutional objectives.
