ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ has been recognized for the fifth year in a row as a national leader in service-learning and civic engagement. For the second consecutive year, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students who took part in the annual springtime ELONTHON dance marathon raised more than $100,000 to benefit young patients and their families with the nonprofit Children’s Miracle Network and Duke Children’s Hospital.

Heart attacks and other cardiovascular conditions kill thousands of Americans every day, and as a high school student, that statistic turned personal for ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ senior Amanda Clark. The biochemistry major focused her undergraduate research while at the university on identifying some ways that heart disease develops, which could in turn lead to better treatments, and her work is the latest to be featured in a series of E-net profiles on Lumen Scholars in the Class of 2011.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ junior Amber Mathis has received a Newman Civic Fellows Award from Campus Compact, a national organization that aims to improve community life and to educate college students on civic and social responsibility. She is one of 135 students from 30 states to receive the award.

What does revenge taste like? Whipped cream, apparently. Dozens of students took part in “Pie Your Professor” at College Coffee on Tuesday morning in a program sponsored by the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Hundreds of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ students will be involved in activities during CELEBRATE! 2011, a weeklong celebration of student achievements in academics and the arts that begins April 26 and runs through May 2. Programs include seminars, art exhibitions, plays, a film festival, dance and music performances.

In the new issue of the Magazine of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, President Leo M. Lambert outlines plans for eight major construction projects as part of the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Commitment strategic plan. More than 1,284 new residence hall spaces will be built over the next three years as part of a transformation of the residential experience. Other projects include a new retail building, including the campus bookstore, on Williamson Avenue; the Gerald L. Francis building on Haggard Avenue for graduate programs in physical therapy and physician assistant studies; a new multi-faith center in the Academic Village; and new facilities for Phoenix athletics.

Students and staff from ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ gathered May 1 in Graham, N.C., for the dedication of the 20th Habitat for Humanity home built by ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ volunteers since the international nonprofit program first established a chapter at the university in 1989.
