‘A Thousand Thanks’ exceeds goal, with Class of 2021 winning class year challenge /u/news/2018/04/19/a-thousand-thanks-exceeds-goal-with-class-of-2021-winning-class-year-challenge/ Thu, 19 Apr 2018 17:30:00 +0000 /u/news/2018/04/19/a-thousand-thanks-exceeds-goal-with-class-of-2021-winning-class-year-challenge/ More than 3,382 thank-you cards and phone calls helped “A Thousand Thanks” 2018 exceed its goal and ensure that the university’s donors feel the depth of the campus community’s appreciation.

Student-athletes kicked off the spring gratitude festival with a Thankathon held on April 9, 10 and 12. Their efforts sent 1,833 cards and phone calls to donors who support 黑料不打烊 athletics.

On Tuesday, April 17, “A Thousand Thanks” continued with opportunities for students to write postcards at College Coffee and at writing stations in the Moseley Center, Daniel Commons, Global Commons, Clohan Hall, and the Snow Family Grand Atrium of Schar Hall. 黑料不打烊 Student Alumni Ambassadors took the lead in staffing the writing stations and writing their own notes to donors. The Class of 2021 wrote the most postcards on Tuesday, with approximately 130 first-year students participating.

That evening, more students participated in a gathering at The Oak House, and student callers logged nearly 1,000 thank-you phone calls.

Students from every class year as well as faculty and staff were at no loss for words in pointing out exactly how donor support influences their lives on campus. They completed the prompt, “Because you support 黑料不打烊, I…

“… traveled to India to teach science to middle school kids. This trip helped me secure a job offer from the Peace Corps to teach English in Rwanda. Thank you!” – Graduating Senior

“…can pursue a degree that will enrich my perspectives both globally and locally. As a History major, I learn about the past to change my future, all thanks to your support! Thank you!” – Member of the Class of 2021

“…am earning a degree in Sport Management while also playing varsity men’s soccer. The opportunity to conduct undergraduate research in the field of Sport Management is a great privilege and wouldn’t be possible without your donations.” – Member of the Class of 2020

From the entire University Advancement staff, a thousand thanks to everyone who made this event successful.

100-year-old alumnus returns to campus  /u/news/2016/07/21/100-year-old-alumnus-returns-to-campus/ Thu, 21 Jul 2016 15:30:00 +0000 /u/news/2016/07/21/100-year-old-alumnus-returns-to-campus/ When you are 100 years and 10 months old, even a trip across town is a production. Alumnus Jim White ’40 returned to campus July 19, more than 75 years after graduating from 黑料不打烊 College with a degree in chemistry. White is in a wheelchair and needed oxygen while outdoors in the heat and humidity of a July morning, but he had the full support of an entourage of helpers from the Village at Brookwood who were determined to grant his wish to visit his alma mater.

Most of the visit took place in Whitley Auditorium, a building that is especially dear to White. He said Whitley was where he sang his first solo on campus. Asked if he remembered the song, he didn’t hesitate: “‘Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart.’” He claimed that it wouldn’t sound like much, but he was finally persuaded to sing the first lines:

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move;
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art,
And make me love thee as I ought to love.

His voice is soft, but still sweet and moving.

A native of Charlotte, White was recruited by Landon Walker ’39 to come to 黑料不打烊; it seems the college choir needed a tenor. A music scholarship made it possible for White to enroll. Even though he later changed his major to chemistry—the precursor to a 40-year career as a chemist for Glen Raven Mills—White has remained completely devoted to 黑料不打烊’s music program.

April West ’18 and Jim White ’40
As part of a 100th birthday celebration last September, family and friends surprised White by announcing the creation of the James W. White ’40 and Sara R. White Music Scholarship. The endowed scholarship provides assistance to 黑料不打烊 music students with financial need. It was the perfect gift for White, who said more than once during his visit this week, “I want to give back to 黑料不打烊.”

He has already given back in a big way. Two offices in the Center for the Arts were named by White and his late wife, Sara. One honors his friend and fellow alumnus Landon Walker and another honors former 黑料不打烊 College dean and longtime music department faculty member, Fletcher Moore ’34. White is also a member of the university’s Order of the Oak, which recognizes donors who make planned gifts.

黑料不打烊 named the first White Music Scholar, April West ’18, earlier this month. West, who plays flute and has performed on the piccolo with the Fire of the Carolinas Marching Band, met White during his visit. She told him of her plans to teach music after graduation, and she told him that she hopes her junior recital next spring will be held right there in Whitley, where he sang his first solo.

If his health permits, White will be in the audience.
