Fire of the Carolinas announces 2013 leadership team

The Leadership Team is built around representatives from each section/instrument in the band including two drum majors who conduct the band on and off the field.

The Fire of the Carolinas 2013 Leadership team:

Anyone interested in joining the FIre of the Carolinas for our 2013 season should contact director of bands, Tony Sawyer tsawyer@elon.edu. There are scholarships available for participation, with brass players receiving a high priority.

The band meets for a camp prior to classes in the fall, and as a class (MUS 109) for 1 s.h. credit on Monday and Wednesday 3:35-5:15. The band plays all home football games with one or two away game trips each season. The 2013 Leadership Team hopes to see you in the band next fall.

Community band Phoenix Winds meets on ��ϲ��’s campus

The Phoenix Winds met Tuesday night in the Center for the Arts for its first rehearsal with 90 members present. The new band is comprised of ��ϲ�� students, alumni and staff, as well as local community members. The community membership is varied, including all age groups from high school to retired local musicians, with some members coming from as far as Greensboro and Chapel Hill to play with the band each week. The band meets every Tuesday night from 7:00-9:00pm on campus and will hold its first concert on May 14th, 2013 at 7:30pm in McCrary Theater at ��ϲ��. The band will also meet during fall semester at the same day and time and will hold a concert in November (11/26).

Please join the band at its inaugural concert on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 7:30pm in McCrary Theater. Admission is free.

Pep Band gathering for Basketball Season

The ��ϲ�� Pep Band plays for all ��ϲ�� men and women’s basketball home games during the season and a select band travels with the teams to the Conference Tournament in March. Scholarship awards are possible depending on commitment level and seniority in the group.

The first games are in a few short weeks, so join in now.

Tony Sawyer awarded national honor by Tau Beta Sigma

The award was created in 1999 to honor outstanding university band directors who have distinguished themselves in the field of university bands, and who, in addition, have been supportive of Tau Beta Sigma and its ideals.

Sawyer was this year’s recipient and was bestowed the award by Kathryn Delores Garrett Kelly, national vice-president for special projects, who came to the concert to present the award in person.

There are 234 universities that have active Tau Beta Sigma Chapters, including Indiana University, Stanford University and The Ohio State University. The award goes to just one collegiate band director per year.

Tony Sawyer travels to Italy to work with marching band

The project began when he was contacted by the band to be a part of its design team and help write music for its 2010 competition season. Once the project was started, Sawyer was asked to travel to Italy to help with the teaching, interpretation and implementation of the music. He plans to travel back to Italy this summer to continue finalizing the show just before competitions.

During the visit, Sawyer was invited to bring the ��ϲ�� band to Besana for an International Music Festival held every summer. Groundwork was done on possible visits by both the ��ϲ�� band to Italy and the Besana band to the United States in the coming years.

The Besana Marching Band is one of only ten marching bands in Italy. It competes in the Drum Corps Europe International competition circuit each season. Besana is just north of Milan in Brianza.

Basketball Pep Band Interest Meeting

There will be an interest meeting for all those who wish to participate in the 2009-2010 Basketball Pep Band on Monday, October 26, at 5:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts room 164 (band room).

This meeting will be to share the season schedule with potential members and to answer any questions you might have about participating in the band. The band takes all ��ϲ�� students with band experience interested in playing.

If you are unable to make this meeting, please let Mr. Sawyer know of your interest by email and he will gladly send you more information.

The ��ϲ�� Pep Band is now organizing for the 2008-2009 basketball season.

Those that are interested in more information about involvement with the ��ϲ�� Pep Band, please place your name and contact information on the Pep Band interest sheet posted outside of Mr. Sawyer’s office in the Center for the Arts, room 158, or email Mr. Sawyer at tsawyer@elon.edu.

The Pep Band is a great place to show your Phoenix spirit and pride. The band is open to all ��ϲ�� students who have band experience.

Sawyer part of panel discussion at National College Band Conference

Tony Sawyer, ��ϲ��’s Director of Bands, participated in the 6th Annual National Collegiate Marching and Athletic Band Symposium from May 29-31 at the University of Washington in Seattle. The conference is part of the College Band Directors National Association and was developed so that directors could meet and share information about collegiate athletic bands through a series of presentations, guest speakers, and collaborative sessions.

Sawyer was selected to participate on the panel discussion titled “Developing Strategies to Work Effectively With Your Athletic Department,” along with directors from the University of Mississippi and University of Arkansas, and Athletic Directors from the University of Arkansas and University of Washington. The symposium has been a huge success and is growing each year, with more than 100 college band directors from around the United States attending in Seattle.

Next year’s event will be held at the University of Connecticut in late May.
