Managing a Chronic Health Condition in College support program for students – Mondays through Oct. 24 /u/news/2011/09/26/managing-a-chronic-health-condition-in-college-support-program-for-students-mondays-through-oct-24/ Mon, 26 Sep 2011 13:47:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/09/26/managing-a-chronic-health-condition-in-college-support-program-for-students-mondays-through-oct-24/ The group serves as a support, resource, educational opportunity, and social network by giving participants opportunities to learn from each other. Discussion topics will be determined by the concerns of the group but may include: relationship strains, medication issues, getting adequate sleep, campus resources and barriers to class attendance.

It is important to note that in order to participate in this group you will NOT be required to disclose any information about your situation/illness that you do not feel comfortable sharing. Also, participants are not required to attend all meetings – come as you are able. You are encouraged to invite others (roommates, friends, others with chronic health conditions) to come with you.

During the fall semester we will meet on Mondays, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. on the following dates:  Sept. 19 & 26, Oct. 3, 10 & 24 in the Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life, Room 105 (401 E. College Ave., across from the tennis courts).

This group will be facilitated by Christine Borzumato-Gainey, Ph.D., LPC, and Troy Martin, MSW. If you have questions, contact cgainey@elon.edu or tmartin5@elon.edu.

“Laughing at our differences” screening – Oct. 26 /u/news/2010/10/21/laughing-at-our-differences-screening-oct-26/ Thu, 21 Oct 2010 16:05:00 +0000 /u/news/2010/10/21/laughing-at-our-differences-screening-oct-26/ In recognition of Disability Awareness month and the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), there will be a screening of the film “Laughing at Our Differences” on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall (Moseley Center). 

This 45-minute stand-up comedy about diversity and disability awareness stars paralympic ski racer Josh Sundquist. In his performance, Josh shares humorous stories from his own experience as an amputee and incorporates motivational lessons to promote understanding between individuals of differing backgrounds.  Josh will be available for questions via video conferencing after the film.

黑料不打烊’s first Disability Awareness Month and event is co-sponsored by: the Disabilities Services Office, Truitt Center, Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, R.N. Ellington Health and Counseling Center and the Isabella Cannon International Centre.
