Digital Pedagogy and MOOCification – Feb. 26 /u/news/2013/02/26/digital-pedagogy-and-moocification-feb-26/ Tue, 26 Feb 2013 21:32:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/02/26/digital-pedagogy-and-moocification-feb-26/ This online event from the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) is co-sponsored by CATL and TLT. Registration is not required.

Description
During this seminar, we will discuss the viability of MOOCs as a pedagogical mode, especially at small undergraduate institutions. The central questions:

  • How do MOOCs disrupt the traditional curriculums, economies, and power dynamics of higher ed.?
  • How do we measure success within a MOOC?
  • What are the various pedagogies of MOOCs (play, experimentation, active learning)? Can these pedagogies be equally successful in various disciplines (humanities, sciences, etc.)?
  • How do we build community within and between MOOCs? And how do we make connections between online and in-person, formal and informal, learning communities?

Even if we don’t agree that the MOOC can be a viable educational form, can we outline useful pedagogical practices that MOOCs inspire? Seminar leaders Jesse Stommel and Sean Michael Morris define MOOCification as “a pedagogical approach inspired by MOOCs that is unleashed in an otherwise closed or small-format course.” This seminar will aim to investigate the techniques that MOOCs point toward and that can be used in on-ground, hybrid, and online classrooms, no matter the scale.

The last 30 minutes will include an interactive experiment that takes participants out into the web, in a sense, bringing the seminar into the MOOC space.

Speakers
Together, the facilitators – Jesse Stommel and Sean Michael Morris – designed and facilitated MOOC MOOC in August of 2012 and January of 2013. MOOC MOOC is a mini-MOOC, a meta-MOOC, a MOOC about MOOCs. The course investigates the form of the MOOC in a playful way with an eye toward adapting its pedagogies for other learning environments.

Jesse Stommel is the Director of English and Digital Humanities at Marylhurst University. He is also the Director of Hybrid Pedagogy. He graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Ph.D. in English and recently finished a fellowship in digital pedagogy at Georgia Tech. He specializes in digital pedagogy, open education, and digital humanities. (@Jessifer)
Sean Michael Morris is a part-time faculty member for Marylhurst University and Manager of Educational Outreach for Hybrid Pedagogy. His work focuses on contemplative pedagogy in digital environments, specializing in the blending of analog and digital pedagogies with an eye toward creative disruption and invention. Beyond the MOOC: Getting Serious about Online Learning /u/news/2013/02/02/beyond-the-mooc-getting-serious-about-online-learning/ Sat, 02 Feb 2013 20:54:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/02/02/beyond-the-mooc-getting-serious-about-online-learning/ The purpose of this webinar is to give participants a solid foundation regarding what online educational delivery models are out there. Ranging from relatively traditional classrooms to fully online courses, online education is being integrated into the college experience for almost one-third of students. Many of these models, such as massive open online classes (MOOCs), are geared toward accessibility and affordability. Other models focus on personalized learning styles, such as competency-based education. Traditional learning management system providers and textbook publishers are also trying to find their places in this new world, promoting yet other models.

Digital Badges as an Open Passport for Learning /u/news/2013/01/03/digital-badges-as-an-open-passport-for-learning/ Thu, 03 Jan 2013 13:49:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/01/03/digital-badges-as-an-open-passport-for-learning/ Speaker: Kyle Bowen, Director of Informatics, Purdue University

As we continue to reshape the form and method of instruction, it is increasingly important to recognize learning in all of its dimensions. Institutions have historically used “credit” as a blunt instrument to recognize course completion. Digital badges provide a new way to visually represent learning, achievements, skills, interests, or competencies that are linked to evidence of students’ work. Purdue University recently launched Passport as a way to engage students and provide a new means of assessing learning. In this webinar, Kyle Bowen will explore the key concepts and lessons learned around Purdue’s badge initiative and future directions for the technology.

Advanced registration is not required. Contact TLT at tlt@elon.edu or 278-5006 for more information.

Experience IT: The importance of a classroom technology policy /u/news/2012/10/23/experience-it-the-importance-of-a-classroom-technology-policy/ Tue, 23 Oct 2012 16:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/10/23/experience-it-the-importance-of-a-classroom-technology-policy/ When and how do we ask students to use classroom technology responsibly? What behaviors should we encourage and discourage? How do we ensure we’re not sending mixed signals about technology use? Whether you ask your students to engage with or to avoid technology use during class, your expectations for their behavior should be clear.

At this session, Paula Patch, lecturer in the English Department, will discuss a variety of technology policies and faculty will have the opportunity to develop their own policies for responsible technology use.
