She says it was that screening that saved her life.

“Had it not been for the skin screening, I probably would have just ignored a mole that I had,” Wolford said.

Sherri was referred to Alamance Dermatology after her screening to check on some problem areas. That mole – an area she had not been concerned about – turned out to be melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.  Sherri had the area safely removed and is back to living a healthy life.

Now, Sherri follows up with a dermatologist four times a year.

“I’m so thankful for the screening. It changed my life,” she said.

Stephanie Page, 黑料不打烊’s associate director of human resources, also had a wonderful first experience with the free screening offered by the Wellness Center. Like many adults, Stephanie had not had a full-body screening by a dermatologist in several years. However, the free screening by the Wellness Center found three areas that needed further attention.

After visiting Alamance Dermatology, Stephanie received treatment at the Duke Clinic. She finished her last surgery in March and has been healthy ever since. She now plans to see her dermatologist regularly.

“I hope the Wellness Center continues to offer this free benefit,” Stephanie said.

These positive experiences show the importance of regular check-ups in regards to maintaining healthy skin. The free yearly screening offered by the Wellness Center is a convenient way to ensure healthy skin for years to come. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next screening expected to take place in April 2016.

The fair featured nearly 50 booths including both on-campus organizations and local businesses from the Burlington and Greensboro areas. It took place this year on the same day as 黑料不打烊 Day, a celebration of the university’s 126th birthday and the largest day of giving in school history.

The Wellness Center sponsors the annual fair and raffled off dozens of prizes to the faculty, staff and students who attended the fair. Winners announced March 12 can claim their prizes from Student Health and Wellness.

One of the most popular booths featured rabbits, cats and dogs in strollers. Kopper Top Life and Learning Center brought some of their therapy animals to interact with visitors. Executive director Deborah Meredith said their facility loves interacting with the campus community.

“We want to show people what the healing powers of animals can do,” Meredith said.

The Extension Master Gardener program from North Carolina State University featured a large booth at the show encouraging faculty and staff to consider new approaches to gardening. Horticulture extension agent Mark Danieley said he enjoyed interacting with faculty, staff and students.

“There are so many possibilities when it comes to gardening, and we just want to get our message to as many people as possible,” Danieley said.

Other organizations at the fair have a home on 黑料不打烊’s campus. Sparks junior peer educator Ana Sophia Adamez said she felt everyone was interested in the Sparks booth.

“I hope people walk out of here with a good idea of the services Sparks can provide,” Adamez said.

Wellness Center staff members said they were very happy with the turnout and grateful for those who attended.

Phoenix Fit Program offers personal training with a twist /u/news/2014/11/20/phoenix-fit-program-offers-personal-training-with-a-twist/ Thu, 20 Nov 2014 18:00:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/11/20/phoenix-fit-program-offers-personal-training-with-a-twist/ Forget jogging on the treadmill. The Phoenix Fit Exercise Program, held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m. in Jordan Gym, offers the benefits of personal training partnered with the fun of group exercise. Open to all faculty and staff, Phoenix Fit is led by senior Exercise Science majors Justin Moreau and LJ LaPorta under the supervision of head coordinator Liz Bailey, lecturer in health and human performance.

Phoenix Fit follows a circut structure that keeps participants moving, and the trainers work with participants to modify the circut for individual needs. When asked about his Phoenix Fit experience, faculty member Doug Purnell says the program has helped him in the wake of an ankle injury. “It’s easy to push yourself if you want to,” says Doug, who is grateful that the program will enable him to get back into running.

Another participant, Marylin Slade, says the Phoenix Fit program makes her feel like she has a personal trainer. “I love the one-on-one. It’s just what I need,” she exclaims. Participants monitor their heart rates, blood pressure and weekly progress with the help of the trainers. Upbeat music and a friendly environment add to the positive atmosphere of Phoenix Fit.

Beverly McQueen loves the variety that Phoenix Fit provides. “I used to do the machines in the gym, but I got bored,” she says. “With Phoenix Fit, you’re not doing anything for too long.” The fast-paced circuit structure of Phoenix Fit provides a dynamic workout. Activities include light stretching, walking or jogging, strength training with light weights and resistance bands, and a variety of other exercises designed to keep participants in action.

Coordinator Liz Bailey says she would love to see more faculty and staff participate in Phoenix Fit. Stop in to one of the sessions to see how Phoenix Fit can change your life!

Pilates Power – Tuesday afternoons /u/news/2014/10/09/pilates-power-tuesday-afternoons/ Thu, 09 Oct 2014 17:25:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/10/09/pilates-power-tuesday-afternoons/ Are you ready to have fun and challenge yourself? Then Pilates is the perfect class for you! Pilates is taught by instructor Shannon Wiggins and meets on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 to 1:15 in Campus Rec Studio 6. This body conditioning routine helps to build flexibility, strength, endurance and coordination without adding muscle bulk. Other benefits include increased circulation and strengthening of the core muscles. This class supports both Level 1 and Level 2 participants and allows modification for individual strength and flexibility. Instructor Shannon Wiggins keeps the class upbeat with constant words of encouragement and lively anecdotes – she even incorporates fun games to make planking fun! Participant Glenda Crawford has been taking the class for three years, and she has noticed herself getting stronger over the course of her workouts. “The class has improved my posture and helped me develop an awareness of how I carry myself,” shares Glenda. Fellow participant Margaret Peoples is a new member of the class; however, she has already started to notice the positive impact Pilates has had on her life. The class has helped her develop mindfulness and alleviate stress, and she leaves Pilates each week feeling refreshed. “It grounds me and helps me appreciate the moment,” shares Margaret. Both women would absolutely recommend Pilates to their colleagues.  If Pilates intrigues you, stop in and join us – as instructor Shannon Wiggins says, “The only bad workout is the one you miss!”
