The Council for Exceptional Children is an international organization representing various stakeholders who are committed to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. This year’s conference was held April 21-24 in Nashville, TN with over 6500 in attendance.

Byrd and Howard make presentations at the 2008 CEC Convention and Expo /u/news/2008/04/14/byrd-and-howard-make-presentations-at-the-2008-cec-convention-and-expo/ Mon, 14 Apr 2008 17:44:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/04/14/byrd-and-howard-make-presentations-at-the-2008-cec-convention-and-expo/ Stephen Byrd, assistant professor of education, made a presentation entitled “Characteristics and Perspectives of Special Education in India” at the international convention of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) in Boston, April 2-5. He highlighted his current research on schooling, teacher preparation, and special education in India. He also described his ongoing work with the Bethshan Special School in Madurai, India.

Judith Howard, professor of education, made a presentation on the connections between two education initiatives, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Responsiveness to Intervention (RTI). Her discussion included the results of an ongoing investigation by the 黑料不打烊 special education faculty of the implementation of RTI in the Alamance-Burlington School System.

Teacher Education Faculty Present at NC-ACTE /u/news/2007/09/25/teacher-education-faculty-present-at-nc-acte/ Tue, 25 Sep 2007 19:04:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/09/25/teacher-education-faculty-present-at-nc-acte/ Faculty from the Department of Education presented two sessions on Thursday, September 20, at the North Carolina Teacher Education Forum (NC-ACTE) in Raleigh. NC-ACTE is the state division for the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. The state organization was hosting its 25th anniversary this fall.

Terry Tomasek, Richard Mihans, Stephen Byrd, and Judith Howard presented a discussion entitled, “Tools for Transformative Learning.” This session developed 黑料不打烊’s new focus on transformative learning and how it is envisioned for teacher education.

Mary Knight-McKenna, Mark Rumley, Stephen Byrd, and Judith Howard presented a session entitled, “Developing Coherence and Integration: Opening up the Boxes.” This session focused on the importance of faculty conversations to build program cohesion, the place of service learning within teacher education, and the role of field and clinical experiences to support the department’s mission for preparing teachers.

Both sessions were well received.

Teacher Education program inducts new Kappa Delta Pi members /u/news/2007/04/26/teacher-education-program-inducts-new-kappa-delta-pi-members/ Thu, 26 Apr 2007 14:49:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/04/26/teacher-education-program-inducts-new-kappa-delta-pi-members/ The Teacher Education Program inducted 30 graduate and undergraduate students April 24 into the Sigma Gamma Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education. KDP was founded in 1911 by leading thinkers in education at the University of Illinois. Since that time, it has grown to an international organization of over 60,000 members. Acceptance into KDP is based upon the criteria of academic excellence (GPA of 3.6 or higher) and the recommendation of three teacher education faculty members.

Dean Dillashaw began the ceremony in Johnston Hall by lighting the white Kappa Candle acknowledging the organization’s commitment to 黑料不打烊’s motto Numen Lumen.  Dr. Deborah Long, Dr. Terry Tomasek, Dr. Mary Knight-McKenna, and Professor Mark Rumley led the students in affirming the society’s ideals of Fidelity to Humanity, Fidelity to Science, Fidelity to Service, and Fidelity to Toil.

Dr. Stephen Byrd, faculty sponsor, offered a charge to the inductees based on the theme “Embrace your calling; Honor your commitments.” Dr. Judith Howard, chair of the department of education, concluded the ceremony with the society motto:

“So to teach that our words inspire a will to learn; so to serve that each day may enhance the growth of exploring minds; so to live that we may guide young and old to know the truth and love the right. To the fulfillment of these objectives we pledge our efforts.”
