They all shared the stage in McKinnon Hall on Monday, May 19, with N.C. State Auditor Les Merritt and Deputy Chief State Auditor Kris Bailey for the 黑料不打烊 Department of Accounting and Finance 3rd Annual Spring Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Seminar. Merritt is the first Certified Public Accountant licensed in North Carolina to hold the post of State Auditor.

 
Accounting professionals from across central North Carolina gathered to hear presentations on public and private sector auditing and professional ethics in the accounting profession. CPAs licensed in North Carolina are required to keep current in their profession through continuing education and 黑料不打烊 has hosted CPE seminars for several years to help them fulfill this requirement. Seminar presenters volunteer their time to speak and proceeds support departmental initiatives and student activities through 黑料不打烊’s Lambda Xi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor society for accounting students.
黑料不打烊’s next CPE seminar will be on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 when the Department of Accounting and Finance hosts its 10th Annual Fall Continuing Professional Education Seminar.

Thomas L. Mark is a Founding Partner and Managing Director of the New Markets Growth Fund (NMGF), a $26 million venture capital fund focused on high-growth technology companies and housed at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). Mark serves or served on the Board of Directors of Lightningcast (sold to NYSE: TWX), Innovative Biosensors, and Artifact Software, and is a board observer for Biosurface Engineering Technologies, BD Metrics, and Paratek Microwave, all of which are NMGF portfolio companies. Mark is also the Venture Capitalist in Residence for the R.H. Smith School of Business at UMCP, where he is a Professor of Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship. In 2004, he received the US Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship National Outstanding Course Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship in Education. Mark is also a Partner in Smith Advisory and Collaborative Services, a Senior Fellow in the Executive Education Department, and teaches in the UMCP Executive MBA program.

Matt McCooe
Founding Managing Partner, Chart Venture Partners

Matt joined CVP at its inception, coming from Columbia University Science and Technology Ventures (STV) where he managed a portfolio of spinout companies and the deployment of STV’s highly profitable seed fund. During his tenure at Columbia, eleven portfolio companies went public or were acquired by publicly traded companies. Prior to Columbia, Matt led two startup operations, both of which reached revenues in excess of $125MM and were acquired.

Managers from area companies gathered at 黑料不打烊 to learn about and discuss best practices for establishing and leading a Project Management Office (PMO). The course, presented by the Executive Education department of 黑料不打烊’s Martha and Spencer Love School of Business in partnership with Tanden LLC, drew participants from as far away as Andover, MA and included representatives from Guilford College, Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp), Lorillard Tobacco Company, Nortel, SunGard Public Sector, and UNC – Greensboro.

The PMO or Project Management Office can take many forms; sometimes providing administrative reporting and support services for dispersed project managers throughout the organization and at other times providing centralized expertise and control of projects across an organization. Participants learned about different possible configurations for the PMO and also covered associated topics such as portfolio and risk management, project prioritization and time management, cross-project controls and communication.

Othonas Xixis, PMP and Manager of Project Management for SunGard Public Sector completed the Project Leadership Series requirements for his 黑料不打烊 Executive Education Certificate in Project Management and was awarded his certificate at the end of the class.  Xixis also serves as VP of Programs for the Piedmont Triad Chapter of PMI.

Paul Cummings is a Principal of Honda Strategic Venturing (HSV), the corporate venture capital arm of Honda Motor Corporation based in Mountain View, California. HSV seeks investment opportunities in technology venture companies to establish the strategic foundation for collaborative partnership both to excel Honda’s innovative R&D and to help technology venture companies succeed in Honda’s product markets. Prior to joining Honda, Paul held various management positions with automotive tier 1 supplier Delphi; including, positions in mergers and acquisitions, business development and operations for a Japanese partnered joint venture. Paul also worked for Accenture in the Sydney, Australia office with the Strategy Consulting Practice. Paul holds an MBA from the University of Chicago, and BA from Michigan State University.

Julie Gerstenberger – Director, External Alliances and Vice President, Office of the CTO

Kodak External Alliances strengthens Kodak’s competitive position by seeking out and leveraging targeted strategic innovation, technology and intellectual property primarily through alliances with universities, government laboratories and privately funded firms. To that end, Julie brings over 20 years of experience in product development and commercialization for a wide range of applications and markets, including some of Kodak’s earliest digital imaging systems. Her experience bridges strategic planning, business development, technical management, and project management. Within External Alliances, her investment focus has been on consumer imaging systems and services, including applications, devices, infrastructure and enabling technologies for consumer markets. Particular areas of interest include distributed media services and semantic systems. Julie holds an MS in Optics from the University of Rochester and a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Jura Zibas
– President, Clear Springs and Executive Vice President, S.N. Phelps & Co.

Ms. Zibas oversees the development and future funding of Clear Springs and Mr. Phelps’ foundation. Central to her role is identifying and selecting companies to receive funding via the Clear Springs investment fund. Clear Springs and S.N. Phelps have invested in early stage companies working closely with management on turn around strategies of companies to benefit the investment. By way of background, Ms. Zibas brings over 16 years of legal experience handling corporate transactions with a focus on intellectual property, litigation, and business development. A chemist by training with an award from the American Cancer Society for her research in alpha interferon, Ms. Zibas holds a BS from Newcomb College of Tulane University and JD from Capital University and attended dental school at The Ohio State University. Presently, she is on the board of trustees of the Creative Education Foundation, PolkWorks, PCC Education Foundation and the board of directors of CORCO, Adapt 4 and Safety Dynamics.


Dan Gordon –
Director of Research, Valhalla Partners

Dan has thirty years’ experience working with technology, as a computer scientist, software developer, manager, analyst, and entrepreneur. Prior to joining Valhalla Partners, Dan was a Director and senior staff member at the PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Technology Centre, analyzing technology trends and consulting on technology-oriented strategies in the software, e-business, wireless, optical, networking, semiconductor IP, and life sciences arenas. He worked with clients from North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Dan was a Contributing Writer and Contributing Editor to the Technology Centre’s annual Technology Forecast, and a frequent speaker at industry and general business meetings. Prior to joining PwC, Dan spent 20 years in Silicon Valley as a software technologist, manager, director, and entrepreneur, including senior technical roles at well-known Silicon Valley firms like Symantec, Intuit, and Oracle. Dan has also been involved in startup companies in the applied Artificial Intelligence and Web applications fields. Dan has a B.A cum laude from Harvard University and an M.S. degree from New York University in Computer Science. He is a Professional Member of the IEEE and ACM.

 
Stephen Ringlee – Principal, Atlas Venture

Stephen Ringlee is Partner of Centesimus Capital, an early stage investment firm in Ames, IA, and formerly Managing Director of investment manager Cimarron Capital Partners LLC which develops and manages regionally-targeted private equity programs to enhance economic development. He has been an active investor and entrepreneur for almost twenty years. He lives and works in Ames, IA and Boston, MA. He has founded or co-founded a number of firms in manufacturing, life sciences, and information sciences as well as participated as a founding investor in others. He is board member of the Iowa Taxpayers Association, a business tax policy group and of a large manufacturer in New England. He is active in statewide industry groups and is a regular speaker on entrepreneurial capitalism at industry, banking, and university conferences. He graduated from UC Berkeley in engineering and from Dartmouth’s Tuck School with an MBA in finance and served as a Captain in the United States Air Force.

Syngenta Certificate in Project Leadership recipients
Managers from several area companies were awarded their Certificate in Project Leadership through 黑料不打烊 Executive Education this week.  To earn the certificate, students must complete a rigorous course of study including a minimum of four courses or three courses and three seminars in the Project Leadership offered through 黑料不打烊 ExecEd in collaboration with Tanden LLC.  Certificate recipients earning their CPL through the open-enrollment series included Sonya Dixon from the Center for Creative Leadership, Doug Chism, and D.J. Rice from LabCorp. 
 
Several managers and executives from Syngenta, NA, a leading international crop science and biotechnology company with headquarters in North Carolina also earned their Certificate in Project Leadership through a special version of the Project Leadership Series tailored specifically for Syngenta employees.  Recipients included Kurt Carmean, Steve Cosky, Dirk Drost, Lee Hubbard, Allen Lo, Edgar Saravia, William Schilling, and Joe Yoder.
 
Tanden LLC is a Project Management Institute Global Registered Education Provider based in Raleigh, NC.  The NC Piedmont Triad chapter of PMI is our promotional partner for the Project Leadership Series.  Certificates were presented at the conclusion of the Project Risk Management courses delivered at 黑料不打烊’s new Koury Business Center at and at Syngenta NA’s national headquarters in Greensboro.

ELP team members celebrate conquering 黑料不打烊 Challenge Course to “get the money to the bank.”
Area executives recently completed the Effective Leadership Program offered by 黑料不打烊 Executive Education.
 
The Effective Leadership Program (ELP) focuses on enhancing effective decision making, organizational leadership, and teambuilding skills.  Participants learn how high-performance teams exercising preferred decision making and leadership styles can increase organizational effectiveness.
 
The ELP incorporates multiple assessments, 360-degree and peer feedback, an intensive comperter driven behavioral business simulation and challenging teamwork dependent exercises.  Participants in ELP Cohort 3 included, Anne Baker, Director of Alamance County Meals on Wheels; Karen Bartles, Director of Cardiopulmonary Services for Alamance Regional Medical Center; Jeff Michel, Vice President, Automotive Fabrics at Glen Raven, Inc.; Heidi Norwick, Executive Director of the Alamance County Women’s Resource Center; Carrie Stone, Program Director for the Alamance Partnership for Children; and Robert Weston, .Net Systems Developer.
 
Effective Leadership Program facilitators were Kevin O’Mara and Matt Valle from the Love School of Business department of Business Administration, Rex Waters, Associate Dean of Students, and Bob Weston, Director of Executive Education.   The next ELP session is scheduled for February 18 – 21, 2008.

Paula Weller talks to CPAs about the need for Lean Accounting.
Nearly 100 regional CPAs gathered in McKinnon Hall on Nov. 9, 2007, to attend the 9th Annual Department of Accounting and Finance Continuing Professional Education Seminar hosted by the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.  This annual seminar is presented by the department of Accounting and Finance in collaboration with 黑料不打烊 Executive Education and meets continuing education requirements for licensed accounting professioanls.
 
Presentations included federal and state tax updates by Jon Glazman of Smith Leonard PLLC and Keith Woods of Carruthers & Roth, PA.  Paula Weller, of 黑料不打烊’s Department of Accounting and Finance, and Coleman Rich, in the Department of Business Administration, presented “Lean Processes and the Need for Lean Accounting,” and Steve DeLoach and Greg Lilly, both in the Department of Economics, delivered  “Economic Update: Will the Sub-prime Market Submarine the Economy?” – which focused on the impact of recent trends in the housing market and their potential impact on the North Carolina economy.
 
Presenters volunteer their time and proceeds from the seminar go to support student and departmental activities through the school’s chapter of the Beta Alpha Psi honor society.
