Lindsey Smith ’12 receives fellowship to GWU /u/news/2012/05/03/lindsey-smith-12-receives-fellowship-to-gwu/ Thu, 03 May 2012 13:31:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/05/03/lindsey-smith-12-receives-fellowship-to-gwu/
Lindsey Smith ’12

Smith will begin her studies this fall in areas such as personnel selection, training and development, work motivation, leadership, work teams and organizational development. The PhD program has around a three percent acceptance rate, and Smith was also awarded a university fellowship, which includes a full tuition award, a stipend and a paid position as a graduate teaching assistant.

Smith is most interested in researching leadership development, work teams and the impact of technology. After completing her degree, Smith would like to work in an applied position doing management consulting or leadership development training.

At the Love School of Business annual awards ceremony last month, Smith received the Student Achievement in Management Award, which is given to a senior management major who has shown enthusiasm and success in his or her major as well as promise for future achievement.

Robert Moorman, Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership, who presented the award to Smith, said, “She performed excellently in class, but her intent was not just to learn how to manage, but to learn in depth about how people manage and how they might do so better. She is interested in the questions about management as well as the answers, and she has an intrinsic interest in learning more and more about our topic.”

“Given the astonishing rate of technological advancement and globalization, the majority of careers are going to have an international component,” said Austin Rhoads, an international business and marketing major.  “Undergraduate students need to be open to the very real possibility of working in a foreign country. The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ ICC was an opportunity for students to network with professionals and gain a better understanding of what an international career truly entails.”

Geoff Scott, president of Scott Asset Management, delivered the keynote address titled, “The Impact of International Careers,” which was followed by four breakout sessions and a panel discussion.

The breakout sessions included:

• “International Business and Global Supply Chains” – Michael Schofer, Coats Plc.
• “The Department of Commerce and International Trade” – Samuel Troy, U.S. Department of Commerce
• “Living/Working in a Foreign Country” – Thomas Nelson, associate professor of communications, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ
• “The Role of Non-Governmental Organizations Abroad” – David Sokal, FHI 360.

“We focused on buying abroad, selling abroad and living abroad,” Rhoads said. “The speakers were absolutely phenomenal.”

“This was a great student-run event,” Tiemann said. “We had professionals with diverse international careers on campus sharing their experiences with undergraduate students.”

The next ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ ICC will be held Spring 2013.

Winning team (from left to right): Sivabrata Das, Kristin Smith, Dave Hamilton, Chrissy Brady Sailstad, Matt Haynes
The competition, which was part of the Goal Setting and Career Development II course, involved 44 students divided into eight teams.

“We were seeking a competitive exercise that would draw on a wide range of the MBA curriculum to give the year’s graduating class the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned,” said Bill Burpitt, Martha and Spencer Love School of Business associate dean for graduate and executive programs. “We hope to make it a signature experience for each year’s graduating cohort.”

The case presented to the student teams was “Reader’s Digest Association.” Teams devised strategic and operational solutions for the company going forward in response to various problems related to:  the aging of its target demographic, its changes in corporate leadership, its return to private equity funding during a period of extreme economic uncertainty, and an industry undergoing major changes as readers migrate to online platforms.

Professor of Management Matt Valle designed and managed the case competition. Karl Sherrill G’08, a commercial insurance advisor at Senn Dunn Insurance and member of the LSB Board of Advisors and the Chandler Family Professional Sales Center Advisory Board, assisted Valle with preparing and executing the competition.

“The judges were very impressed with the performance of the teams and their ability to organize quickly, analyze a very complicated case and present insightful case solutions within a limited time,” said Valle. “The faculty was impressed as well, and appreciative of the level of student effort and goodwill associated with the case competition.  The faculty was also gratified that the results demonstrated the depth of learning achieved by these MBA students who will soon graduate.”

The competition also featured a keynote address delivered by Michael Gannaway, vice president of VF direct to consumer/customer teams at VF Corporation, who spoke about the process of successfully branding a company or product and how that applies to a business professional’s personal brand.

Economist David Blanchflower visits ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ /u/news/2012/03/08/economist-david-blanchflower-visits-elon/ Thu, 08 Mar 2012 21:15:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/03/08/economist-david-blanchflower-visits-elon/
Dr. Blanchflower presents in LaRose Digital Theatre

The presentation was co-sponsored by the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

In his presentation, Blanchflower said he does not think Europe can cut its way to growth. The world economy has been hit by a once in a hundred years financial shock and “the scale of the shock has been underestimated.”

Global action worked to help “save the world.” This included coordinated actions by central banks, quantitative easing and a coordinated fiscal stimulus. However, Blanchflower said the stimulus was withdrawn too soon in many European countries.

He noted that in the previous ten years things have been made worse because risks have been underpriced, which has caused a productivity shock. The price of risk will rise, it is not temporary, and the economy may take 20 years to rebound and adjust.

Blanchflower said deficits are not the problem; governments and central banks must generate growth. Europe did not have a program to deal with growth. The U.S. has a small growth rate and unemployment is falling. It is the only success story when compared to other countries.

“This is the greater depression. Greece has to default because it has no growth strategy.”

Blanchflower feels austerity was always doomed to fail because countries still do not have growth plans. Banks are not lending and small firms cannot get credit.

He showed data from a UK lab experiment that measured consumer and business confidence. The experiment showed that consumer and business confidence has collapsed.

“Drops in confidence and spending are driven by one group – the public sector workers.”

Blanchflower concluded his presentation by saying the Eurozone crisis is far from over and that there are more surprises to come.

Blanchflower, who visited as part of the Love School of Business’ Executive-in-Residence program, also guest lectured in Assistant Professor of Economics Vitaliy Strohush’s course, Money and Banking.

About David Blanchflower
David Blanchflower is the Bruce V. Rauner Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, visiting professor at the University of Stirling in Scotland, research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Mass., Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Studies at the University of Munich, program director at The Institute for the Study of Labor at the University of Bonn in Germany, and visiting scholar at the Reserve Bank of Boston. He is also the economics editor of the New Statesman, economics columnist at the Guardian and a contributing editor for Bloomberg TV.

From 2006-2009 he served on the Monetary Policy Committee at the Bank of England. He won The Daily Telegraph’s Great Britons of 2008 Award in the “Business Person of the Year” category.

Blanchflower received his Ph.D. from the University of London. He has been awarded three honorary doctorates and in 2009 was made a Commander of the British Empire.
