Ketner’s presentation on Bezier curves was the hit of the session and represented her fourth national talk on her multiple undergraduate research projects.

“Papierfalten, Papiroflexia, or Origami: Folding Your Way through School Mathematics” was a 90-minute, hands-on workshop sharing insights gained from Russell’s GST 325: Math Origami course and the results of his grant from the Japan Foundation. 

The international audience featured participants from Bermuda, France, China, and Japan. The more than 100 participants worked together to create models investigating school mathematics from algebra and calculus to statistics and geometry.

Much of Russell’s previous work has been with grade-specific bands in various Alamance County schools. This grant represents his first school-wide initiative encompassing work in multiple disciplines from grades K-12.

Ketner accepted the award from NCCTM president Wendy Rich. Bampia Bangura of North Carolina A&T State University read her citation. Ketner’s dedication to mathematics education through her studies, service, and scholarly work set her well above her peers at the state level.

Ketner also co-presented two sessions at the state conference.  “Exploring North Carolina Graphically” shared a data set and investigation which grew out of her statistics work with associate professor Alan Russell.  “Bezier Curves have Great Connections” reflects Ketner’s capstone mathematics research with Russell.

“Investigating Students’ Concepts of Standard Deviation” reported the findings of Russell’s CATL Scholar project to a national audience. Ketner was prominently featured as a student co-investigator with Mays as project advisor.

Mathematics Department at USCOTS /u/news/2009/06/29/mathematics-department-at-uscots/ Mon, 29 Jun 2009 12:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/06/29/mathematics-department-at-uscots/ Faculty of the Mathematics Department and a rising junior attended the United States Conference on Teaching Statistics (USCOTS) hosted June 25-27 by the Ohio State University. 

Senior Lecturer Lisa Beuerle attended the conference in her role as first-year core coordinator. Assistant professors Kirstie Doehler and Laura Taylor attended pre-conference workshops in addition to the conference.  Assistant professor Ayesha Delpish presented “Statistics in Context: Service-Learning in Statistics.” 

Associate professor Alan Russell, senior lecturer Jan Mays, and rising-junior Amanda Ketner presented “Including Undergraduates in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Statistics” as part of a CATL scholar’s project.

This is the second time the department has participated in this bi-annual conference.  黑料不打烊’s work in statistics and statistics education was again well received.

Russell presents at international mathematics education conference. /u/news/2007/09/10/russell-presents-at-international-mathematics-education-conference/ Mon, 10 Sep 2007 14:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/09/10/russell-presents-at-international-mathematics-education-conference/ Alan Russell, associate professor of mathematics, presented at the 9th International Conference of the Mathematics Education into the 21st Century Project.  This conference, focusing on Mathematics Education in a Global Community, was held on the campus of UNC Charlotte and included participants from more than 20 nations. 

Alan presented “Origami, Papierfalten, and Papiroflexia: Paper Folding in Mathematics Education,” which focused on the deep mathematical content arising from simple paper folding projects and featured discussion of these activities among teams of educators from Australia, Canada, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Russia, and the UK.

This year’s theme was taking statistics teaching to the “next level”. Ayesha Delpish and Alan Russell presented their latest work as part of the Idea Exchange Forum. Ayesha is working with a cluster group dedicated to the creation and study of a proto-typical second courses in statistics. Jan Mays and Alan Russell are working with a cluster group focused on assessing the classroom value of a variety of statistical activities. All three are expected to present with their clusters at the next USCOTS meeting in 2009. 黑料不打烊 can share with pride that the mathematics department was regarded by many as “way ahead of the curve” in pioneering classes and excellent practices in statistics teaching.
