Hope In Environmental Protection

Ajantha Perera, the Periclean Scholar-in-Residence for the Class of 2011 Periclean Scholars: Sri Lanka, will speak on environmental protection in Sri Lanka on Thursday, March 31, at 4 p.m. in KOBC 100 (LaRose Digital Theatre).

Ajantha is an environmentalist and the founder of the National Program of Recycling and Solid Waste in Sri Lanka. More events to follow in the next week. The Class of 2011 Periclean Scholars and Ajantha appreciate your support on environmental issues globally and in Sri Lanka.

Pericleans host event to show commitment to environmental action

A group of Periclean Scholars from the class of 2011 supported the 350.org global action movement on Oct. 10 by continuing their work in the garden and outdoor classroom at Graham Middle School as part of the “10/10/10 Global Work Party.”

The local project is one of many events that scholars are organizing to show their commitment to the environment as they gear up for another event they are organizing in Sri Lanka. The event is called the LEAF, or Leaders in Environmental Advocacy Forum, held at the University of Colombo in Colombo, Sri Lanka during winter term.

Fall Harvest open to community at ��ϲ�� Community Garden – Oct. 23

Students for Peace and Justice and the ��ϲ�� Community Garden are hosting FALL HARVEST on Friday, Oct. 23, from 2-4 p.m. at the ��ϲ�� Community Garden behind the Truitt Center.

We are providing local and organic food and because it tastes so good, s’mores and hot cider. You are welcome to bring something! We’ll be carving pumpkins, playing games and eating good food.

This is open to the entire school so invite your friends, tell your classes and let’s enjoy the beautiful fall weather and festivities.

“Our Land, Our Life” documentary viewing – Oct. 29

Students for Peace and Justice is showing “Our Land, Our Life,” a documentary about the Dann sisters battling the U.S. government over grazing rights to Shoshone land in Nevada. This a human rights issue between the government and Native Americans. This is an inspiring film. There will be time at the end for discussion, questions or comments.

7-9 p.m. in the Oaks 207 (the building in between the first and second, where campus police is)

These documentaries will become a regular SfPJ monthly event. This is our first one!

Interest meetings for high ropes course with ��ϲ�� Outdoors – Oct. 22 and 23

Are you ready to breakaway again the Friday after Fall
Break? ��ϲ�� just finished the ALL NEW High Ropes course as apart of The ��ϲ��
Challenge. Be some of the first students to climb the new course. Outdoors is
going to the course at the Lodge on Friday, Oct. 24, from
3-7 p.m.

Wear comfortable shorts that you can be harnessed in… nothing too
loose or baggy. Make sure you wear close-toed shoes and no hanging jewelry.
Bring lots of water and a snack.

We will be leaving from Arts West at 2:45 p.m. so we can walk down
to the Lodge.

The interest meetings are Wednesday, Oct. 22
at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 23^, at 6 p.m. in Koury Commons in
between the Pool and the Fitness Center.

I hope to see everyone on the ropes! Come challenge

“Our Land, Our Life” movie showing April 24

“Our Land, Our Life” is a documentary being shown on the lawn outside Moseley on Thursday, April 24, at 8 p.m. The movie is about two Shoshone women who have to fight the U.S. government in order to keep their reservation land.

Rain location: The Zone.

College Coffee: campaign against using sweatshop products

Come to Students for Peace and Justice’s College Coffee Table April 8. Whiteboards will be available so that you can write your thoughts on ��ϲ��’s policies on products (t-shirts and sports clothing) from sweatshops. Take pictures with your whiteboards and we’ll send them to ��ϲ�� officials. We will also be de-“swooshing” your Nike clothes. Bring your Nike stuff to College Coffee on Tuesday, April 8th!

Eating local conserves energy and reduces CO2 emissions. Less
preservatives have to be used because the travel distance to the consumer is
close, which makes local healthier.
