The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs under the US State Department. Arabic is one of thirteen critical languages covered, and for summer 2014, the 7 possible sites for Arabic study are in Morocco, Jordan and Oman.  The website with further details is attached.   Professor Shereen Elgamal is Maddy’s faculty advisor.

Maureen Ihrie completes World Literature in Spanish: An Encyclopedia /u/news/2011/10/31/maureen-ihrie-completes-world-literature-in-spanish-an-encyclopedia/ Mon, 31 Oct 2011 18:42:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/10/31/maureen-ihrie-completes-world-literature-in-spanish-an-encyclopedia/ Ihrie’s associate editor is Salvador A. Oropesa, of Kansas State University. Approximately 850 entries examine Spanish-language writings from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Roughly 190 contributors (from the US, Canada, Spanish America, Spain, the Philippines and Australia) contributed to the project. 

Many entries take a thematic or cultural approach; representative titles include: : ” Soccer in Literature;”” Afro-Hispanic Literature in Spanish America;” ” Chicano Movement Literature and Publishing;” ” Torture in Modern Spanish American Literature” ” Trujillo as Theme in Dominican Republic Writing;  and ” Havana in Literature.”

Ihrie and Lunsford present at national conference /u/news/2005/08/30/ihrie-and-lunsford-present-at-national-conference/ Tue, 30 Aug 2005 16:41:00 +0000 /u/news/2005/08/30/ihrie-and-lunsford-present-at-national-conference/ Maureen Ihrie and Ernie Lunsford of the Department of Foreign Languages delivered a presentation titled “Making Connections: Social Commentary, Pop Music and High Tech” at the 2005 international conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in New York City on July 31. Their presentation showcased a multi-media project involving music, images and a variety of online exercises adaptable to conversation, composition and culture classes at the middle and upper levels of language learning. The project was developed with technical support from Scott Windham and Deborah Ellington.

Each of these students has met the following criteria:

  • GPA in the top 35% of their class
  • GPA of at least 3.0 in Spanish courses
  • Completion, by semester’s end, of at least 2 courses beyond SPN 310 at 黑料不打烊
  • Completion of at least 3 semesters of college work
  • Demonstration of genuine interest in and support of Hispanic culture
  • Evidence of good moral character.
