ZOMGamefest a resounding success /u/news/2007/11/07/zomgamefest-a-resounding-success/ Wed, 07 Nov 2007 23:11:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/11/07/zomgamefest-a-resounding-success/ The officers of the 黑料不打烊 chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) would like to congratulate the winners of the first ZOMGamefest, held Nov. 3, 2007, at 9:30 p.m. in Belk Library.

The event – which combined tournaments in Halo, Quake, and Wii Bowling with free play on Tron, Guitar Hero 3, and a variety of board games – was a resounding success with 130 attendees, free food and drinks, tournament prizes and door prizes from local retailers and high-tech companies, and – of course – lots of gaming madness.

Look for the Spring 2008 edition of ZOMGamefest next semester, and start practicing your best moves now.

What:
Come see posters and demonstrations done by students in GST364 “Imagining Technology.” Poster presentations will cover all aspects of pre-20th century science and technology, including how the technology works, the historical climate into which the invention was introduced, and the impacts of these technologies on society (religion, business, politics, economics, and everyday life, etc).
Some of the student project topics include: newspapers, looms, catapults and trebuchets, firearms, swords, wireless telegraphs, printing press and movable type, the typewriter, silk, photography, Arabic numerals, the bicycle, the bayonet, batteries, paper, fireworks, sugar, beer brewing, the abacus, the cotton gin, aspirin, glass, distilled liquor, and toilets.
Refreshments will be served. Yum!

Students, Faculty enjoy video game tourney /u/news/2006/10/30/students-faculty-enjoy-video-game-tourney/ Mon, 30 Oct 2006 20:23:00 +0000 /u/news/2006/10/30/students-faculty-enjoy-video-game-tourney/ All-student team “L1 Cache” faced faculty/staff team “Staff Infection” during the Quake 3 finals at the semi-annual video game night sponsored by the 黑料不打烊 chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery. L1_Cache has been the reigning champions for several semesters, and was victorious yet again with a 50-45 win over Staff Infection in the final round.

L1_Cache continued their momentum by making it to the final round in the Halo tournament against another student team, BAMFS. But with a 50-21 final score, BAMFS put an end to the L1_Cache dreams of double-victory.

The game night, known as the “Faculty Frag Fest”, included tournament-style games in Halo 2 and Quake 3. A total of 12 teams competed in the single-elimination contests. All participants enjoyed door prizes, free drinks, and pizza.

Conklin publishes book chapter /u/news/2006/08/29/conklin-publishes-book-chapter/ Tue, 29 Aug 2006 12:15:00 +0000 /u/news/2006/08/29/conklin-publishes-book-chapter/ Megan Conklin, assistant professor in the department of Computing Sciences, has published “Beyond Low-Hanging Fruit: the Next Generation in FLOSS Data Mining” in the Springer computer science series for IFIP, the International Federation for Information Processing (Volume 203/2006, pages 47-56).

The book chapter discusses the motivations and methods for collecting quantitative data about free, libre and open source (FLOSS) software projects. The paper also describes the current state of the art in collecting this data, and some of the problems with this process. Finally, the paper outlines the challenges data miners should look forward to when trying to improve the usefulness of their quantitative data streams.

Conklin publishes journal article /u/news/2006/08/21/conklin-publishes-journal-article/ Mon, 21 Aug 2006 18:08:00 +0000 /u/news/2006/08/21/conklin-publishes-journal-article/ Megan Conklin, assistant professor in the Department of Computing Sciences, co-authored “FLOSSmole: A Collaborative Repository for FLOSS Research Data and Analyses” for the International Journal of Information Technology and Web Engineering.

She and her co-authors, Kevin Crowston and James Howison from Syracuse University, have collaborated on several articles about data mining of free, libre and open source software (FLOSS) projects.

The article appears on pages 17-26 of the June-September (Vol 1, Issue 3) issue of IJITWE.

Conklin to chair workshop, present paper /u/news/2006/02/28/conklin-to-chair-workshop-present-paper/ Tue, 28 Feb 2006 13:11:00 +0000 /u/news/2006/02/28/conklin-to-chair-workshop-present-paper/ Megan Conklin, assistant professor in the Department of Computing Sciences, has had her paper titled “Beyond Low-Hanging Fruit: Seeking the Next Generation in FLOSS Data Mining” accepted for presentation at the Second International Conference on Open Source Systems. This conference is to be held in Como, Italy in June.

In addition to serving on the Program Committee for the conference, she is also co-chair of the co-located Workshop on Public Data about Software Development (WoPDaSD), along with Gregorio Robles and Jesus Gonzalez-Barahona of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain. The goal of this workshop is to encourage the analysis of publicly-available software development data sources, as well as to foster the exchange of data between different research groups.
