Kirby Wahl coaches dialects for Theatre Raleigh production

Kirby Wahl, professor in the Department of Performing Arts, coached six accents for the Theatre Raleigh production of “Peter and the Starcatcher,” including English Received Pronunciation, Cockney, Cornwall and Scottish. “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a wildly funny play by Rick Elice with music by Wayne Barker, purports to tell the origin story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook and runs through June 22.

Following extensive training in this approach to speech and accent instruction, Professor of Performing Arts Wahl has been recognized as a certified teacher of Knight-Thompson Speechwork (KTS).

The appeal of KTS, with its emphasis on developing the speaker’s awareness of the physical actions that produce speech, and its playful yet rigorous approach, is growing rapidly in American theatre training programs. Wahl and the cohort that he trained with this past summer now bring the number of certified teachers of KTS to 60 internationally.

An article co-written by Professor Kirby Wahl of the Department of Performing Arts) and Artemis Preeshl , a visiting faculty member last year in the Department of Performing Arts, has been published by the Voice and Speech Review (VSR).

Entitled, “,” the article is currently available online, and will be featured in an upcoming print edition of the VSR.

Graduate of acting program appearing in new season of AMC's 'Preacher'

Kristina Adler ’12, whom ��ϲ�� friends will recall her as Kristina Loeffke, is playing the role of Elsa this season in the series “Preacher.”

In flashback sequences, she appears to be a young Adolf Hitler’s love interest and things will get particularly interesting in Episode 11, scheduled to air on Aug. 28.

Adler is a graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting program. ��ϲ�� faculty and staff will remember her in ��ϲ�� stage productions as Tecmessa in “Ajax,” Lenny in “Crimes of the Heart,” and Kitty in “The Time of Your Life.” She is currently acting, directing, and producing films in Atlanta through her film production company, Jump Cut Collective.

Adler is traveling the festival circuit with her Southern gothic short film, “Birthday Cake,” which recently won the audience award at the 2017 Atlanta Film Festival and will next appear at the Macon Film Festival.
