Katie Nash accepted to Traveling Archivist Program /u/news/2014/03/26/katie-nash-accepted-to-traveling-archivist-program/ Wed, 26 Mar 2014 12:45:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/03/26/katie-nash-accepted-to-traveling-archivist-program/ As part of this program, Nash will participate in the field service program that provides collection assessment, training, instruction and some supplies to North Carolina cultural repositories that hold archival materials. Nash will participate in a day long training workshop, in addition to visiting an institution under the guidance of the state’s current traveling archivist and former State Archivist, Dick Lankford. A handful of archivists around the state were selected to deliver field services for the Traveling Archivist Program.

Nash and Winter highlighted the semester long class assignment, the research process, and the teaching candidates role in simulating a one room schoolhouse lesson plan for local elementary school students.

'Belk Cribs' video shares details of library resources /u/news/2014/02/07/belk-cribs-video-shares-details-of-library-resources/ Fri, 07 Feb 2014 14:50:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/02/07/belk-cribs-video-shares-details-of-library-resources/ 黑料不打烊’s Belk Library and Teaching and Learning Technologies collaborated over the fall semester to create the library’s new promotional video “.”

The video follows a fictional college student, Cody, who believes that 黑料不打烊 Belk Library is his “crib.” Modeled after the MTV “Cribs” show, Cody takes viewers on a tour of the library to show where he studies, where he gets research and writing help, where he enjoys his DVD and music collection, where he buys coffee through a machine that accepts Phoenix Cash, and where he finds assistance from his Personal Librarian.

He also shows a hidden treasure—the Archives and Special Collections.

This collaboration was made possible by staff and students including (Video Producer), (Outreach Librarian), (Special Collections Librarian and Archivist), and a number of 黑料不打烊 students who are listed below.

Nash and Rudd present at conference /u/news/2013/11/12/nash-and-rudd-present-at-conference/ Tue, 12 Nov 2013 14:45:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/11/12/nash-and-rudd-present-at-conference/ The Tri State Archivists Conference in Greenville, S.C. included members from the Society of North Carolina Archivists, Society of South Carolina Archivists and the Society of Georgia Archivists. The title of Nash and Rudd’s presentation was “All Together Now!: Archives as Collaborative Space.” Rudd and Nash discussed the collaboration between Belk Library and faculty in the School of Education in which they worked together to teach undergraduate education majors how to find and select relevant primary sources in archival repositories and the most effective ways to incorporate them in their lesson plans to assist with meeting Common Core goals.

The Incorporation Committee will be in charge of research, planning, and drafting of documents to aid in the non-profit incorporation of AWB, U.S. Chapter. 

Archivists without Borders is an international organization, the primary objective of which is “cooperation in the sphere of archives work in countries whose documentary heritage is in danger of disappearing or of suffering irreversible damage, with particular emphasis on the protection of human irreversible damage, with particular emphasis on the protection of human rights.”

Katie Nash, archivist and Special Collections librarian, presented Aug. 9 at the Society of American Archivists’ annual conference in San Diego.

Nash participated in a lightening round session titled “Beyond Borders of Belief: Spirituality and the Archival Enterprise.” Nash’s presentation, “Tug of War: University Archives vs. Church Archives,” included discussion on the many challenges and opportunities she is faced with when managing both the university archives and church archives, as well as making both collections available. 

Other presenters included the archivist for the National Museum of the American Indian, the archivist for the Mennonite Church USA, the archivist for the Grateful Dead Archive at UC-Santa Cruz, and many others.

Founded in 1936, the Society of American Archivists is North America’s oldest and largest national archival professional association. SAA’s mission is to serve the educational and informational needs of more than 5,500 individual and institutional members and to provide leadership to ensure the identification, preservation, and use of records of historical value.
