She joins 24 other students from across the country this summer for a 10-week research experience. Fellows were chosen based on academic merit and the strength of research proposals. The competitive APS program is designed to help fund undergraduates pursuing physiology-based research questions.

Deprey will conduct research with Assistant Professor Jennifer Uno in the Department of Biology. Her project focuses on investigating the communication between the intestinal microbiota, the gut and the brain.

In addition, Deprey also receives a travel grant to allow her to attend and present her research data at the APS annual meeting (Experimental Biology), which will be held in San Diego in April 2016. Here she will present her work with other APS fellows to other experts from various universities.

Experimental biology is a broad-based scientific meeting of five to seven diverse biological scientific societies. This multidisciplinary meeting includes studies in anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, nutrition, and pharmacology.

黑料不打烊 College Fellow wins national biology research award /u/news/2014/02/26/elon-college-fellow-wins-national-biology-research-award/ Thu, 27 Feb 2014 02:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/02/26/elon-college-fellow-wins-national-biology-research-award/ Mary Savarese, a senior biochemistry major and 黑料不打烊 College Fellow, received a national abstract award for research work she will be presenting later this spring at Experimental Biology, an annual meeting of more than 14,000 scientists and exhibitors representing six sponsoring societies and multiple guest societies.

The multidisciplinary meeting includes studies in anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, nutrition and pharmacology

The American Physiological Society sponsors the David S. Bruce Outstanding Undergraduate Abstract Award. The Bruce Awards were created in 2004 in memory of David S. Bruce from Wheaton College and honor his commitment to promoting undergraduate involvement in research and experimental biology. The Award recognizes outstanding research being done by undergraduates.

Savarese has been conducting research with Assistant Professor Jennifer K. Uno in the Department of Biology where her work focuses on the development of zebrafish as a model organism to study Celiac disease.

Specifically, Savarese is examining changes in the microbes residing in the intestines of fish fed a wheat-based diet versus a more traditional shrimp-based fish diet. She will travel to Experimental Biology in San Diego where she will present her work along side other undergraduates from across the country in a research competition also sponsored by the APS.

Students in 黑料不打烊’s Exercise Science, Biology & Biochem majors celebrated Physiology Understanding Week last week with local children at the Boys and Girls Club and Positive Youth Attitudes Youth Center.

“PhUn” Week is sponsored by the American Physiological Society and was established to increase student awareness of physiology in their everyday lives. 黑料不打烊 students are among the first undergraduates to participate in PhUn week activities that bring scientists all over the country out into the community to enhance student interest in the physiology of their bodies.

Accompanied by Assistant Professor Jennifer Uno from the Department of Biology, 黑料不打烊 students worked with kids teaching them about their hearts, bones and exercise.
