]]> Janet Myers presents at the National Association of Fellowship Advisors /u/news/2011/08/25/janet-myers-presents-at-the-national-association-of-fellowship-advisors-2/ Thu, 25 Aug 2011 14:07:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/08/25/janet-myers-presents-at-the-national-association-of-fellowship-advisors-2/ Myers participated in a four-person panel titled “Advising Academics: A Panel Discussion,” which focused on strategies fellowship advisors can use to effectively balance administrative and faculty roles.  In addition to attending panels by fellowship advisors from colleges and universities throughout the U.S., Myers had the opportunity to hear from representatives from the major scholarship competitions, including the Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Truman, Udall, Goldwater and Fulbright, and to talk with representatives from United Kingdom and Irish universities about their programs.

Myers presented on a panel that focused on the use of web technologies to streamline national fellowship advising.

]]> Janet Myers publishes book on emigration in Victorian literature /u/news/2009/10/14/janet-myers-publishes-book-on-emigration-in-victorian-literature/ Wed, 14 Oct 2009 15:55:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/10/14/janet-myers-publishes-book-on-emigration-in-victorian-literature/ Myers’ book explores representations of middle-class emigration from Britain to Australia in the nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on how emigrants transplanted a range of material and ideological practices associated with English domesticity. 

Through chapters that pair Victorian novels with visual art and non-fictional sources such as letters, memoirs, and emigrant guides, Antipodal England delineates how such “portable domesticity” enabled nineteenth-century British emigrants to see themselves and their culture as capable of preservation and even re-invention despite the enormous geographical and cultural shift across continents that Australian emigration entailed.
