Jon Metzger’s text enters into new printing

Professor of Music and Artist in Residence Jon Metzger has had his method book, “The Art and Language of Jazz Vibes,” enter into its sixth printing of its second edition this month.

The text is in use by percussion and jazz studies students throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and South America.

Jon Metzger Presents Jazz Vibraphone Clinic at NC Day of Percussion

Artist in Residence, Professor, and Chair of the Music Department, Jon Metzger, presented a jazz vibraphone clinic at the North Carolina chapter of the Percussive Arts Society’s Day of Percussion on April 2 at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. Other clinicians included Julie Spencer, marimba, Rich Holly, percussion, and Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, drum set. All clinicians were also featured on a final, event ending concert.

Artist in Residence, Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Jon Metzger is one of the artist/teachers featured in an article by Tyler Tolles called Jazz Vibraphone Pedagogy: Ask the Masters in , a publication of the Percussive Arts Society.

The other artist/teachers featured include Rusty Burge (College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati), Tony Miceli (University of the Arts, Temple University, and Curtis Institute of Music), and Ed Smith (the University of North Texas at Denton).

Jon Metzger Presents at PASIC

Professor Jon Metzger in the Department of Music presented a keyboard improvisation lab and performed at the Percussive Arts Society’s International Conference held in Indianapolis, Ind., in mid-November.

Metzger’s appearance was co-sponsored by the PAS Keyboard Committee, Musser (vibraphone), and Pro-Mark (sticks and mallets).

Professor of Music Jon Metzger is a part of a recording, “Christmas,” with Neena Freelon and the John Brown Big Band that has been nominated for consideration for the 56th Grammy Awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Metzger conducted the recording sessions for the album.

Jon Metzger receives ASCAP Plus Award

Professor of Music Jon Metzger has received a Plus Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers for the use of his compositions on recordings and in performances.

Cited in the annual review of his catalog were four new commercial recordings (including When Freedom Swings, with Ira Wiggins and Cyrus Chestnut; Christmas with the John Brown big band and Neena Freelon; Carolina Tracks with Keith Waters and Jim Ketch; and Ben Seni Variations with Doug Richards and Howard Curtis), three new published compositions (including Just Ask, Step to Step, and You Got What?), dozens of performances in the United States and abroad, and being named to the Downbeat magazine Readers’ Poll in the Jazz Vibes category.

Jon Metzger Completes Residency

Professor of Music, Jon Metzger, recently completed a four-day residency at the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. While on campus, Metzger worked with the entire percussion studio, including five graduate students, for individual and small group mentoring sessions on jazz vibraphone techniques. He also presented three master classes for the entire music department, performed with three separate jazz ensembles, and gave a solo recital. Metzger’s appearance at UCA was co-sponsored by Musser and Pro-Mark.
