The asssistant professor of biology is a co-investigator on a project titled "The new buzz: AI-powered acoustic monitoring of insect communities to advance conservation of tropical rainforests," being funded by the National Geographic Society (NGS) and Microsoft. 

The grant will allow Biology major Alina Iwan '19 to travel to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama in 2019 to continue a faculty mentored research project.

Assistant Professor Jen Hamel's co-authors on the peer-reviewed research article include three recent ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ graduates who contributed to the study as part of their undergraduate research experiences.
