Julianne Papadopoulos, a music in liberal arts major, won second place in Division 7B, Sophomore Women, and Samantha Childers, a music education major won third place in Division 11A, Junior Women. 

Both singers, along with music performance major Sarah Baker, received high marks qualifying them for the Regional NATS competition which will be held in March at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. All three singers are voice students of Associate Professor of Music Hallie Coppedge Hogan.

Music professor presents poster at CMS Regional Conference /u/news/2016/03/01/music-professor-presents-poster-at-cms-regional-conference/ Tue, 01 Mar 2016 22:15:00 +0000 /u/news/2016/03/01/music-professor-presents-poster-at-cms-regional-conference/ Associate Professor of Music, Hallie Hogan presented a poster titled “Historical Storytelling Through the Musical Interpretation of Personal Letters” on Feb. 26 at the College Music Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference held at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. 

She presented research on art song compositions that utilize personal letters, in their literal form or as inspired verse, to convey story and illuminate history while musically depicting the personality and perspective of the letter-writer.  

Currently on sabbatical, she is researching the courtship letters of her grandparents which date from 1906 to 1911 in preparation for a new musical collaboration.

Music faculty attend Vocal Pedagogy Institute /u/news/2014/07/21/music-faculty-attend-vocal-pedagogy-institute/ Mon, 21 Jul 2014 23:30:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/07/21/music-faculty-attend-vocal-pedagogy-institute/ Department of Music faculty members Hallie Coppedge Hogan and Polly Butler Cornelius traveled this summer to Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, to attend a week-long Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute.

Created and directed by the renowned pedagogue, Jeanette LoVetri, the CCM Institute offers training in LoVetri’s Somatic Voicework which integrates the knowledge of vocal science, vocal function,and vocal health with bodywork and awareness to unlock the singing voice for any style of singing including classical, pop/rock, country or contemporary musical theatre. 

Hogan and Cornelius completed Levels I and II of Somatic Voicework and will travel to Shenendoah next summer to complete their certification in this method.

Graduating senior selected for music festival /u/news/2014/05/06/graduating-senior-selected-for-music-festival/ Tue, 06 May 2014 19:45:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/05/06/graduating-senior-selected-for-music-festival/ Jessica Zelenack, a graduating Music Education major, has been selected to perform this summer at the prestigious Atlantic Music Festival in Waterville, Maine. 

Zelenack will perform operatic scenes and arias in the Opera Workshop program directed by a world renowned artist-faculty from leading musical institutions. The Atlantic Music Festival showcases young, extraordinary talent in classical music. It runs July 7-Aug. 3, 2014.

Zelenack is a voice student of Associate Professor Hallie Hogan in the Department of Music.

Hallie Hogan featured in regional Messiah concerts /u/news/2012/12/18/hallie-hogan-featured-in-regional-messiah-concerts/ Tue, 18 Dec 2012 14:23:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/12/18/hallie-hogan-featured-in-regional-messiah-concerts/ Hallie Coppedge Hogan was featured as the alto soloist in two performances of Handel’s Messiah with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and the Cumberland Oratorio Singers under the direction of Fouad Fakhouri. The performances were held on Dec. 15 at Galatia Presbyterian Church and on Dec. 16 at First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, N.C. 

This engagement followed another performance of the full Messiah featuring Hogan on Dec. 3 at Reynolds Auditorium with the Mozart Club of Winston-Salem and members of the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nate Zullinger.

Music student excels in summer Opera Academy /u/news/2012/09/25/music-student-excels-in-summer-opera-academy/ Tue, 25 Sep 2012 21:10:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/09/25/music-student-excels-in-summer-opera-academy/ 黑料不打烊 senior Rachel Jones, a music performance major, participated in the 2012 Opera Academy of California Summer Program in San Francisco this past June and July.

Rachel performed the role of Soeur Anne de la Croix (Sister Anne) in Francis Poulenc’s “Dialogues des Carmelites,” which was about the martyrdom of the Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution. She was in the ensemble for Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and was selected to cover the role of Lauretta in “Gianni Schicchi” by Giacomo Puccini. All three operas were fully staged productions.

Rachel closed the July 25 Opera Scenes Program by performing “Olympias Couplets” in Les contes d’Hoffmann. This scene, commonly called “The Doll Song”, was directed by Rod Gomez who has directed operas in San Francisco, New York, and Germany. Rachel utilized her ballet training at 黑料不打烊 to give life to the beautiful singing automaton, “Olympia,” created by a mad scientist. Her final opera scene of the summer was directed by Yefim Maizel who established the Opera Academy and serves as a Guest Stage Director for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Rachel played the maid, Despina, in a scene from the first act of Cosi fan tutte by W.A. Mozart.

Aria Evening performances include Verdi’s “Saper vorreste” from Un Ballo in maschera. She performed “O Mio Babbino Caro” from Gianni Schicchi for a Master Class. Other scene work included “Una Donna a Quindici Anni” from Cosi fan tutte, “Sull’aria” from The Marriage of Figaro, Act 1 finale from Don Pasquale, and the Act 1 trio from Die Fledermaus.

Rachel earned a work study scholarship for this summer experience. She used her theatrical experience as a stage crew member on “Don Giovanni” as well as various scene shows. Her training at 黑料不打烊 in applying makeup prepared her for her work in providing makeup for all of the male roles in “Gianni Schicchi”. She also formatted and edited all of the supertitles for “Gianni Schicchi”.

Rachel is a voice student of Dr. Hallie Hogan, and also studied voice at 黑料不打烊 with Barbara Peters.

A Panel Discussion on Words and Music featuring composer and poet with performances by faculty members Ken Lee and Julie Celona-VanGorden. Monday, March 2nd at 4 pm in Whitley Auditorium.

A Recital of the Songs of Lori Laitman featuring faculty and students from 黑料不打烊’s music department.  Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:30 pm in Whitley Auditoirum.
