Gerald Knight, associate professor of music
Gerald R. Knight, associate professor of music and coordinator for music education was an invited lecturer this past summer at the Salzburg Institute of Religion, Culture and the Arts in Salzburg, Austria.

The institute investigates the arts and humanities within the context of the Christian tradition. Knight’s presentation, “Black Sacred Music in Protest and Social Justice: Prophetic Theology and Enlightenment Ideologies,” provided analysis of the texts of black sacred music as commentary on the social, economic, religious, and political issues relating to the enslavement of black people in America and the persistent manifestations of injustice in contemporary American society.

Gerald R. Knight, Assistant Professor of Music

Gerald R. Knight Invited Lecturer and Adjudicator

Assistant Professor Gerald R. Knight in the Department of Music recently gave a lecture presentation titled “The Sacred Works of Margaret Bonds” at the national conference “A Symposium of Celebration:  Margaret Allison Bonds and the Women of Chicago”.

The organizers of the conference invited Knight to make the presentation.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Videmus sponsored the two-day symposium, which convened on the campuses of UNCCH and North Carolina Central University. The internationally recognized Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College Chicago, which curates a significant collection of manuscripts, correspondence, and other cultural artifacts by Bonds (Helen Walker-Hill Collection), granted Knight unprecedented access and provided copies of rare and unpublished scores by the composer that are still in manuscript (handwritten) form.

The scores were secured through the CBMR for the conference and provided invaluable information for the lecture on the music. In addition, Knight conducted the audience, which consisted of historians, performers, and teachers, in the reading of two of the scores, which were projected onto a screen. One of the works had not been performed since it was premiered more than 50 years ago.

Margaret Bonds, a gifted teacher and composer, was also a concert pianist and the first African American to play with the Chicago Symphony, which she did while still an undergraduate student.

As a judge, Knight recently adjudicated the “Graduate Male” category for the National Association of The Teachers of Singing at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. In February, Knight adjudicated high school singers competing for the Grady-Rayam Prize in Sacred Music.

The “National Spiritual” Scholarship Foundation sponsored the competition. UNC-Chapel Hill hosted this competition for solo voice.

Gerald Knight Performs and Moderates Panel at Historic Conference /u/news/2012/03/28/gerald-knight-performs-and-moderates-panel-at-historic-conference/ Wed, 28 Mar 2012 20:56:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/03/28/gerald-knight-performs-and-moderates-panel-at-historic-conference/ The conference was historic due to its scope and to the many legendary performers, composers, scholars, and pedagogues from around the country that attended and participated in the many panels and performances.

In addition, faculty from UNC Chapel Hill and several of the university’s ensembles also took part.

Herbie Hancock, famed jazz musician, performed on Thursday evening.

Knight, who is a tenor, performed solo art songs on one of the recitals that featured some of the most exceptional singers in the country. The recital concluded with an aria from the opera “Amistad” sang by the critically acclaimed soprano, Marquita Lister, who has performed in many of the major opera houses of the world. In addition, Knight was selected to be moderator of the panel “Spiritual vs. Art Song: A Matter of Interpretation”. The panelists were Dr. Uzee Brown (professor of music, Morehouse University) and Dr. Willis Patterson (emeritus professor of voice and associate dean, University of Michigan), who are acknowledged scholars and speak on the topic frequently and have significant spiritual and art song publications. Knight framed the panel discussion with a practical analysis of the development of the spiritual and art song and from a philosophical perspective evolving from Richard Kapp’s conceptualization of  “context” and the human experience. Dr. Knight also suggested and assisted in the planning and execution of the choral sessions during the conference.

An unexpected opportunity prevailed when Knight, who teaches voice here at 黑料不打烊, had the opportunity to engage in a private conversation with George Shirley, Distinguished University Emeritus Professor of Music and former Director of the Vocal Arts Division of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, about vocal pedagogy. Dr. Shirley, who is a Grammy Award winner, garnered international recognition for his excellent performances at major opera houses around the world and the Metropolitan Opera. Knight remarked, “I will be so excited to share what I learned from Dr. Shirley with the singers in my studio, University Chorale, and choral methods class.”

Reflecting back Knight admits that it was an amazing and very humbling experience to walk into a room to sing and to speak in front of people whose substantial accomplishments and careers are legendary, critically acclaimed, and noted in history.

In addition, Knight has been invited to moderate a panel discussion at UNC-Chapel Hill titled, “Spiritual versus Art Song: Issues of Interpretation.”  Panelists include Dr. Willis Patterson and Dr. Uzee Brown; both are distinguished scholars who are noted for their publications of art songs and spirituals.  Dean Willis Patterson, retired associate dean of the Earl V. Moore School of Music at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, published the collection Art Songs by Black American Composers, it is the definitive compilation of art song literature of this type in print.

Dr. Uzee Brown, chair of the Department of Music at Morehouse College, noted arranger and composer, published his own arrangements in a collection entitled O Redeemed!— it is standard in the spiritual and concert repertoire. Herbie Hancock and the renowned soprano, Leona Mitchell, are just a few of the prominent performers and scholars who will participate in the festival called Videmus@25. Knight is also excited to be one of the soloists invited to sing on one of the concerts of the festival.

The festival examines the contributions made to classical music by women, African Americans and underrepresented composers. Festival dates are March 21-24 and the event is sponsored by The University of North Carolina Department of Music, Department of History, UNC Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Science, The Institute for African American Research, The Center for the Study of the South, Center for Black Music Research, and The National Association of Negro Musicians.
