Gallucci publishes ecosystem case study with the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science /u/news/2017/10/03/gallucci-publishes-ecosystem-case-study-with-the-national-center-for-case-study-teaching-in-science/ Tue, 03 Oct 2017 16:55:00 +0000 /u/news/2017/10/03/gallucci-publishes-ecosystem-case-study-with-the-national-center-for-case-study-teaching-in-science/ Kathy Gallucci, associate professor of biology, has published the case study “Why Can’t We Build a Biosphere?” on the website of SUNY Buffalo’s National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science. The work was supported by the National Science Foundation.

This case study is designed to help students learn about the ecosystem services of Earth (Biosphere 1) by examining the challenges faced by the designers who tried to replicate its components in Biosphere 2.

After an introduction to Biosphere 2, students learn about the four main types of ecosystem services and discuss how Biosphere 2 might provide these services and calculate their own ecological footprint, demonstrating how humans are overreaching the ecosystem services of Biosphere 1, just as the biospherians could not be sustained by the ecosystem services included in Biosphere 2.

The case study can be found at

Samoan chief and educator Gaugau Tavana visits campus – March 18 /u/news/2014/03/15/samoan-chief-and-educator-gaugau-tavana-visits-campus-march-18/ Sat, 15 Mar 2014 20:40:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/03/15/samoan-chief-and-educator-gaugau-tavana-visits-campus-march-18/ Indigenous wisdom encompasses many fields including ecological, botanical and taxonomical knowledge, and is acquired through daily experimentation. It is passed from one generation to the next, typically by word of mouth, and carried in the vessels of culture, language, legend, myth and folklore and serves as a storehouse for local biological information. People around the world are now recognizing that this invaluable knowledge, externally validated by Western science, is diminishing and this impacts all levels of society. Indigenous wisdom can provide an appropriate model to improve the standard of living and quality of life for all, while sustaining the health of the environment for future generations.

In addition to receiving a renewable scholarship, honorees are assigned a GSK woman scientist to serve as their personal mentor. GSK hosts two meetings a year in Research Triangle Park when mentors connect with their mentees. Chris Esters of University Advancement arranged this additional opportunity for the mentors and mentees to meet. Afterward, the mentors talked with biology majors in Linda Niedziela’s biotechnology course (Biology 348) about their own career paths and provided advice for students seeking employment in pharmaceutical companies after college.
