���ϲ����� professors, students and alumni continue to make news this summer through their research and campus activities. Notable in recent weeks was regional media coverage of ���ϲ����� School of Law's full accreditation from the American Bar Association, regional stories and broadcasts on ���ϲ�����'s new head women's basketball coach, and mention of the ���ϲ����� Poll by the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune.

Incoming freshman Lauren Astley '15 of Wayland, Mass., was killed this week in her hometown. As her family, friends and future ���ϲ����� classmates mourn her loss, Smith Jackson, vice president for student life and dean of students, emailed the university community on July 6, 2011, with reflections on Astley's accomplishments and her service to the community.

Two small colonies of bees will be on exhibit later this week near the McMichael Science Building and the Ernest A. Koury, Sr. Business Center as the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association holds its summer conference at ���ϲ����� from July 7-9, 2011.

���ϲ����� has approved an energy conservation policy that outlines campus energy reduction efforts in areas that include heating and cooling, lighting, and computer use.

An ���ϲ����� student with the goal of one day running for public office is taking part this summer in the Virginia Governor’s Fellows Program, a highly selective internship for rising college seniors, recent college graduates or graduate students from Virginia that places them in the governor’s office and other state agencies.

���ϲ����� alumni Eddie Bridges '57 and the late Claude Manzi '50 will be among 14 individuals inducted into the Guilford County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame in the Class of 2011, a group that will bring the total number of inductees since the Hall's creation to 78.

���ϲ�����’s Alumni Field House has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, which awards the internationally recognized benchmark for design, construction and operation of high-performance, environmentally friendly buildings.

Two trees that towered over ���ϲ����� for decades were felled Wednesday morning, and the dried wood from both will be featured in the future Numen-Lumen Pavilion, which will house a multi-faith center planned for the very site in the Academic Village where the giant oaks once stood.

Family and friends of former ���ϲ����� First Lady Verona Daniels Danieley ’49 celebrated her life Monday afternoon as hundreds of mourners filled ���ϲ����� Community Church for a memorial service that honored a woman who “set the gold standard as a builder of community.”

At the recent annual national meeting of Sigma Kappa Sorority, ���ϲ�����'s Kappa Zeta chapter received, for the 10th year in a row, the organization's highest honor - the Three Stars Award of Excellence.
