School of Communications’ Three Great Internship Fridays event helps students sizzle with success /u/news/2012/04/18/school-of-communications-three-great-internship-fridays-event-helps-students-sizzle-with-success/ Wed, 18 Apr 2012 17:00:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/04/18/school-of-communications-three-great-internship-fridays-event-helps-students-sizzle-with-success/ Students who attended the event had the opportunity to meet, network and share lunch with local internship recruiters from Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Burlington and Charlotte from a variety of organizations, including:

• Pace Communications
• Trailblazer Studios
• UNC Public Television
• National MS Society
• Habitat for Humanity
• Times-News
• Market America

Following the networking event and luncheon, the School of Communications Internship Office hosted its first round of internship prep seminars, where the internship recruiters shared valuable advice with students on how to make the most of their internship experience and how to build a winning portfolio and reel. These seminars will be held each Friday through April 27, and are required for Communications students with their first academic internships.

Both the students and professionals agreed on how the experience was invaluably helpful. Briana Berné, a junior Strategic Communications major said, “I had actually been a little nervous about going into things like career and networking fairs, but through this event, I saw that I could articulate my goals and strengths professionally and with ease and confidence.”

Professor Nagatha Tonkins, Director of Internships for the School of Communications, also was thrilled with the event’s turnout.

“It’s always a rewarding experience because professionals are greatly impressed with our students and facilities; and our students get internships from this event,” Tonkins said.
