Deborah Long, interim dean of the School of Education, welcomed the inductees and introduced the faculty and staff. Long also led the new candidates in an activity to explain the conceptual framework. Taylor McKee ’12, a 3rd grade Elementary Ed teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School in Burlington, N.C. spoke to the candidates about what it takes to be a teacher. Richard Mihans, Education Department chair had the honor of reading the names while Laura Williams, director of the Curriculum Resource Center shook their hands and presented them with a special commemorative pin. A reception immediately followed the event. Below is a list of the teacher candidates who were inducted:

Forty-two teacher candidates in the School of Education participated in an induction ceremony Oct. 1 to mark their transition as student teachers.

Deborah Long, interim dean of the School of Education, welcomed the inductees and introduced the faculty and staff. Angela Ansah, associate dean and director of the Teacher Education Program, spoke to the new candidates about the School of Education’s new conceptual framework.

Kinsey Spencer ’11, a history teacher at Franklin Academy in Wake Forest, N.C., spoke candidly to the candidates about her first day as a student teacher. Richard Mihans, chair of the Department of Education, had the honor of reading the names while Cherrel Miller Dyce, assistant professor in education, and Bernard Curry, assistant professor in sociology and program coordinator for social studies and history, shook their hands and presented them with a special commemorative pin. A reception immediately followed the event.

Faculty members spoke to the new candidates about the School of Education’s conceptual framework and making the transition from student to professional.

The highlight of the ceremony was the talk given by Courtney Kennedy ’05, a kindergarten teacher at North Graham Elementary School. Kennedy was recently honored as the Alamance-Burlington Teacher of the Year, and she passed along to the candidates some of the things she had learned in her first years of teaching.
