However, the “Chinese” New Year is actually celebrated as the Lunar New Year by many Asian countries as a national holiday. The celebration refers to the first day of a year whose months are coordinated with the cycles of the moon. Every Asian culture has their own set of traditions, but the most common tradition is the scaring of “Nian.” Legend says the half-dragon, half-lion monster “Nian” comes out of hiding and attacks people during the Lunar New Year. As a result, families set off firecrackers to scare away the monster from harming the year to come. There will be folk music, guest calligraphers, traditional crafts, authentic cuisine and more! Free and open to the campus community.  It is not a festival to miss!
