The mission of IADMS is to enhance health, well-being, training, and performance in dance by cultivating medical, scientific, and educational excellence. Lauren Kearns (professor of dance and chair of the Department of Performing Arts) and Matthew Wittstein (assistant professor of exercise science) were also presenters at the conference along with Exercise Science alumnae Corinne Kenny ’17 and Emma Faulkner ’09.

Lumen Scholar Ashley King ’17 is traveling to Hong Kong to present her dance biomechanics research at the International Dance and Medicine Science Conference that begins Oct. 19.

The dance and exercise science major has studied the effects of chronic injury and leg dominance on the saut de chat, a type of jump.

King’s mentor is Joyce Davis, professor of exercise science. Davis is also attending the conference and will present her research on the effects of pointe shoes on lower body kinematics.

ESS faculty members and students present at CDC conference /u/news/2012/05/15/ess-faculty-members-and-students-present-at-cdc-conference/ Tue, 15 May 2012 21:26:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/05/15/ess-faculty-members-and-students-present-at-cdc-conference/ Wally Bixby, Paul Miller, Eric Hall, and Resa Walch recently presented at the International Congress on Physical Activity and Public Health in Atlanta, Ga., held April 17– 20. The conference was hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health. This congress created a forum for researchers and practitioners to interact and discuss recent developments and future directions in the areas of physical activity and public health. The conference was attended by approximately 900 professionals representing 44 countries.

Bixby presented his paper titled “Relationships between activity, fitness, self-esteem and satisfaction with life.” Current student Brooks Martin was a co-author on this paper.

Miller and current student Chrissy Kostura co-authored the paper “Relationship between exercise dependence, physical fitness, and physical activity.”

Hall and Walch’s paper “Changes in weight and physical activity patterns among first year college students.” This paper was co-authored by former students Kelly Blake and Ashley Simms.

AAHPERD provides its 25,000 members with a comprehensive array of resources, support, research, and programs to further the health and well being of the American public. It is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance,health promotion, and other areas related to achieving a healthy lifestyle.

Davis, associate professor of physical education, has been elected to chair the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s Biomechanics Academy. The purpose of the Biomechanics Academy is to provide opportunities for professionals to share ideas and knowledge in both research and pedagogical endeavors related to kinesiology and biomechanics. Davis will serve a three year term.

Jackson Coppock answers questions.

Jackson Coppock (Exercise Science) and Kelly Clark (Biology) presented their Kinematic Analysis of a 400 M Hurdler at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Conference held in Tampa, FL last week.  Their research was one of eight proposals accepted by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) from hundreds of undergraduate submissions nationwide.  Dr. Joyce Davis, Professor of Exercise Science, was the faculty mentor.   黑料不打烊’s Undergraduate Research Program provided financial support for the students to present their work at AAHPERD, an alliance of associations with over 22,000 members.
