Tina Das and Casey DiRienzo have had their paper “Global Tourism Competitiveness and Freedom of the Press: A Nonlinear Relationship” accepted for publication by the Journal of Travel Research, a peer reviewed research journal focusing on travel and tourism behavior, and development reflecting the importance of tourism both economically and socially.

In this study, they empirically explored the role information plays in a country’s ability to compete globally in the tourism industry. Using the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (2007), a new measure of tourism competitiveness developed by the World Economic Forum, and the Freedom of the Press Index (2006), they conclude that countries that enjoy free press as well as those that have restricted press can be competitive in the tourism industry.

No prior research has established the existence of a nonlinear relationship between tourism competitiveness and information.
