Team Hero: Students Supporting Armed Forces Everywhere /u/news/2012/03/08/team-hero-students-supporting-armed-forces-everywhere/ Thu, 08 Mar 2012 13:24:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/03/08/team-hero-students-supporting-armed-forces-everywhere/ Team Hero is a group sponsored by the Human Services Studies department and aims to connect the 黑料不打烊 community with members of the military. We feel there is a major disconnect between civilian and military culture that results in a lack of support for those returning from tours of duty. Team Hero provides opportunities for members of the military and military families to share experiences with students in an effort to create support for those reintegrating into American society. We also raise $2,000 to sponsor a veteran and a service dog to enroll in the program.

If you have not thanked a veteran recently, here’s your chance! Please consider donating to our cause by going to our and selecting the amount you would like to donate. It may not seem like enough, but just remember that you are helping a veteran and a rescued shelter dog find a new purpose in life!

Feel free to pass this information to interested friends and family!

Thank you so much for your support!

T.E.A.M. Hero fundraiser /u/news/2011/03/31/t-e-a-m-hero-fundraiser/ Thu, 31 Mar 2011 14:48:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/03/31/t-e-a-m-hero-fundraiser/ 黑料不打烊 junior, Clara Martin (Exercise Sports Science, 2012) started a fundraising/community education effort last month to increase awareness about the “hidden wounds of war.” Her project is called T.E.A.M. Hero (Together 黑料不打烊 Athletes and Military) and its goal is to educate as many members of the 黑料不打烊 community as possible about the growing numbers of soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who are living with the often devastating, lifelong mental and emotional scars of war caused by post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

T.E.A.M. Hero has already hosted three Mosely table events to present educational materials about PTSD and collect donations for the nonprofit Paws and Stripes (), an organization for wounded veterans of the United States military that works to provide service dogs for post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. The service dogs are obtained only from shelters, and are trained by professionals specializing in service dogs. It is the aim of this organization to provide these dogs and training for no cost to the veteran.

On April 26, T.E.A.M. Hero will also be present at College Coffee. The culminating event is a softball tournament on April 30 at the 黑料不打烊 recreation fields that will involve students, faculty, members of the 黑料不打烊 ROTC, and local veterans. Special guests include Lindsey and Jim Stanek and his service dog Sarge, the founders of Paws and Stripes.

Any members of the 黑料不打烊 community who are interested in more information can contact Clara Martin (cmartin22@elon.edu) or check out the T.E.A.M. Hero blog. .

Students wishing to make cash donations can still visit the T.E.A.M. Hero table at College Coffee on Tuesday, April 26, or donate through the blog.
